Look around and find the Graham engine with the superharger. They were a low boost centrfugal blower on near 220 cubic inches. Nonsupercharged hp was 90. The forced iduction made near 120/125. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...CPse86H4WQcrXIOMFK07**Q=&docid=I1K0jx62ge4JhM
That is a way cool set up.But I'm looking at the more common engines. For ease of finding parts and what not.
Frazer offered a McCulloch supercharged 140HP version of their flathead six. A contemporary road tester was a bit disappointed because you could not tell it was supercharged. No noise, roughness or drama just an extra 28HP.
Guys, I like that old, weird stuff too, but the o/p said he'd like to walk into any parts and find the stuff he needs. He also said he wants to cruise that thing across the country. Within those parameters, let's try this one: I can't say the year here, but some Chevy pickups came with a 250 with what was essentially one half of a Q-jet carb, and a factory split manifold. A little milling, a torque cam, and then bolt up a dual pattern 200 4r . Lock up the converter, and cruise the thing at 2200 and 70 mph. They did come with one of those "electronic" HEI's
Supposing 3.73 final drive, a 700 R4 would give you an effective gear ratio in o/d of 2.61. 200 4r would give you a 2.50. Probably wouldn't mean a whole lot, rpm- wise @ 70 mph
I'm pretty sure the 700 has a slightly better first gear.Plus a my local pick a part yard an auto trans is an auto trans. They all cost the same.
Found the engine I want yesterday.Walk into work today and I'm told we are on 12hr 7 days until further notice.Which wouldn't be a problem but the engine is 90 miles away in another state.
You might want to check out cliffordperformance.net before making your final engine choice. They do LOTS of inline stuff; worth looking at. Your gonna have a way kool ride !!! mike
Sleep is over rated. 4 hours to go there, load it, and get back still gives you 8 hours, plenty to shower and sleep 6 hours. Went many a day on 4-6 hours of sleep! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Hit up a friend to take a little road trip with you and you can each catch a short nap while the other drives!
Found an engine that is closer to me at the same price. If all goes as planned I will be picking it up on Sunday.I also might have found the transmission I want also.I'm hoping to pick it up on my way home from getting the engine.
Well guys I'm going to be the proud new owner of a 1967 Chevrolet 250 inline 6.At about 11:00am tomorrow morning.
Congrats. A 250 isn't a wailer but it's as dependable as an anvil with 7 main bearings and a fairly short stroke. Story: My son had a 60s chevy pickup with a 250/3 speed and a 3.73 rear gear. I had a similar chevy pickup with a 292/3 speed O.D. and also a 3.73 rear gear. We took a trip with our pickups and I could hear his truck 250 just screaming at interstate speeds. My overdrive truck was loafing along very comfortably at low RPMs. When we got to our first gas stop our trucks both took the exact same amount of fuel! I was blown away. We put over 1000 miles on our trucks on that trip and I really expected his motor to blow, as high as he was turning it for hours on end. That little 250 never overheated, smoked or rattled. Good choice.
My Old man had a 71 C10 with a 250, 3 speed, 3:55 rears. Lots of torque, it would pull that long bed stacked full of green oak firewood like nobody's business and still knock down about 17 mpg. I learned to drive a manual trans in that truck. He kept it about 17 years. I wanted it, but some slickster came by and talked him out of it. Still have a soft spot for 71-72 C 10's, would love to have a swb stepside, even with a 250 it would be fun.
If all goes well I will be picking up the transmission that I want this weekend.I'm going with the 700r4.
