Hello! Lots of smart rodders out there, and I could use your help in identifying a few parts on a recent purchase. The car is a 1954 Meteor SR-1. This is not the Mercury or Ford Meteor, but a fibergl*** body built by **** Jones in California/Denver in the early 1950's It is the yellow car in the pictures below. It is sitting on a modified postwar Ford frame, with Ford suspension and torque tube/banjo rear end. The steering spindles, drag link, cross arm, and Pittman arm all appear to be Ford, but I cant identify the steering box. I have posted several photos which I hope will help narrow the guesses. The brake M/C and pedals are 1960 Chevy C10 truck, so it seems that the original builder was not afraid to stray far from Henry's parts bin. Any guesses?? Thank you in advance!
Not sure why the order of the photos scrambled when I posted and 2 of them duplicated, but with a bit of navigating you can see all the pieces of the puzzle that I am requesting help on.
Can't help with the ID of the steering box, but that one pic clearly shows something written on the pitman arm, if you can get a clear pic of it, or just copy down what it says, that would probably go a long way in ID'ing it. Also, I hope you post progress on this car here if you plan to build it. I watched it in that auction and I really thought about bidding on it myself, I think it was a bargain, I've just already got too many projects of my own. I would however love to watch it come together. Both cars, really.
Hi Squablow. I will keep you posted on the build, although at present it sits behind my Lancer, and a Victress S1 roadster. Like you, I have a bunch of projects, and I don’t want to get too many started at the same time. The casting numbers on the Pittman arm are 1942- 48 Ford, although I am routinely told that the steering box is not Ford. I suspect somebody may have adapted the arm to the box. Thank you for weighing in!
The steering box. Looks like one for a 49-51 Ford p***enger car. Sector preload is made by rotating the lower sector cover.
Well THAT's beautiful! Thanks deucemac and thanks ididn'tdoit1960, for the quick and accurate ID. Now I know what I need to rebuild. I like how this forum works.
