its a 400 ford in a 77 3/4 ton truck, were gonna pull the ****** and all in one shoot, i want to start the motor in the truck before i pull it. gonna bring a new cylinoid, cap rotor, plugs, starter fluid, wonderin if i should change the oil and filter first, also think i should pull the valve covers and pour some oil over em. i would like to know if you can prime that oil system pryer to startup.
Dont waste your time with all that stuff.Crank it over for a minute,to get oil pressure. Then file the points and add some fresh gas.And your ready to fire up.
A little Mystery oil down the plug holes is a good idea also. Careful filing the points on that duraspark--Feder
[ QUOTE ] A little Mystery oil down the plug holes is a good idea also. Careful filing the points on that duraspark--Feder [/ QUOTE ] that's the least you should do and let it sit o'night will free up rings and keep from busting them. don't be tempted to turn it over even by hand it could end up costing you some serious change. I'd do an oil change right off the bat.
I sure as hell wouldn't use starting fluid. I'd dribble a 1/2 cup of gas down the carb vent after I got oil pressure with the starter. Crank-start-the end... Hey, if you'er determined to change the spark plugs anyway, crank up the oil pressure while all the plugs are out. It'll save on your battery and the fuel pump will prolly pick up fuel shortly after you achieve oil pressure.
I agree that you don't need to prime it if you crank it for awile until oil pressure builds up. Use fresh gas. No points. Should be a snap. It'd probably be good to hook up a mechanical oil pres gauge also. Brad
thanks all, im not determined to do anything, ive just never started a motor thats been sittin that long. i appreciate all the info.
i just picked up two old ford trucks last summer. they both werent run for years but "ran when parked" i put a new battery in, dumped some gas down the carb, and they both fired up pretty easy. they both drove around the yard too! it oughta start right up for ya
thanks for the good vote of confidence, im alwas a sceptic but this motor was runnin when parked and the owner changed the oil first.
Definitely run the oil pump remotely, so you get pressure to everything (hopefully) BEFORE trying to crank it over. I'd also change the oil before trying to start it. There might be a lot of condensation in the pan and you want oil, not water, reaching the bearings, etc.
Just bought a short block that had been sittin in a shop for some years, with proper asembly lube and everything, I wanted to just run it. But the machinist insisted on lookin at the crank, sure enought there was light rust on the "tops" of the journals and it needed polishing. I was surprised. And a dumb question...can you tell the difference between a 400 and a 351 by lookin at them? They are both Windsors in trucks right? Is there a site to decode the ford pickup door sticker? Thanks, good luck with your motor.
the 350 chev motor in my Dodge Lancer sat for about 5 years. The rings were stuck , very little compression. I squirted ****** fluid into each cylinder and let it sit for a couple of hours. The engine fired on 2 , then 4 ,then all 8 and kripes did it smoke as it burned the fluid out.. That was 2 years ago, I still drive the car. Although I should get off my lazy *** and fix the intake oil leak.
i had a SBC motor sit for 5 yrs, all I ever did was before storing was shoot some oil in it & turn it over by hand & every 6 months or so I would turn it over again. well after sitting all that time all I did was shoot a couple squirts of oil in the cylinders & cranked it over w/o the plugs in, then put the plugs in dumped some gas down the carb & it fire up after the first couple of cranks. smoked like a pigg & ran rough for a bit but after a few it cleared up & sat there & idled fine. just do what the other have said & you should be just fine....joe
IF IT IS DAMP WHERE YOU ARE,THE WATER WILL FIND ITS WAY IN. TRY POURING COKE A COLA DOWN THE SPARK PLUG HOLES AND THE CRANK CASE, LET IT SIT, THEN TURN OVER A FEW TIMES TO BLOW IT OUT OF THE CHAMBERS. THEN CHANGE THE OIL ADD NEW PLUGS AND FIRE IT. THE COKE WILL DISOLVE ALL OF THE RUST AND SLUDGE FROM THE MOTOR SO THAT YOU DONT SCAR THE CRANK OR RINGS OR ANYTHING ELSE. ( DONT LAUGH UNTIL YOU TRY IT ) PUT A DIRTY PENNY IN A GL*** OF COKE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
