Rik Hoving sent me a link to Rod Emory's Valley Custom Shop site . I find these pictures eerily coincidental !!!!!!!!

while it would be your money, a restoration isnt about what "you want"...

a restoration would ideally be an iteration of something that it was best remembered for.

    paying homage to a memory.

like the Enola Gay, for example, wouldnt be the ENOLA GAY if it was restored back to the day it rolled off the ***embly line.... know'm sayin'?

sometimes what we want takes a back seat to what is right... its not always about us, because objects of historical significance will be around long after we are gone.

I agree, a "restored" Hot Rod, Custom or Race Car needs to be restored to a moment in time when it was most famous.

I think there was a discussion on the *** hat with the '57 chevy custom that someone said I'd hate to be the one who was remembered for ****ing it up.

    Gold.
    Good luck.
Judging from your work, you won't be 'that guy.'

Not necessarily. I have seen plenty of decades-old nitro lacquer jobs (solid colors/no clear) that have held up perfectly.

It was the clear lacquer which was applied over candies (starting in the mid-50's) that cracked due to weather. If the metal is solid underneath, the lacquer will hold up fine.

IMHO...I think it should be restored to the best version possible that they did. I agree with Rik on the gold version. I think the proportions are correct with that version the radiused wheel wells the choice of grille all very nice and even. It will however be hard to find some of the stock items mechanically that is. Trust me I know. I have a 54...

Definitely restore to the later version.

But personally, I would paint it my favorite color of the two regardless of which color came first or last originally.

I can only speak to what I think I would do, if I were in your lucky shoes.
In my mind the only thing better than owning a valley custom would be to own a Westergard custom.
You absolutely have the best of the best style wise.
I wouldn’t change a thing. It would go back to exactly how it last left them. Down to the last detail, no matter what it takes. Including the gold lacquer.
If the door is as bad as you say, I would change it or skin it.
Anything can be done, that car is worth it.

I haven 't looked at this thread in several days but this is another of one those subjects and statements. To follow exactly how it last left, the front end and engine compartment would look as follows ,Exterior sheetmetal painted gold , underside of hood would be painted white, inside fender jambs and aprons semi-gloss black, underside of front bumper grille deflector painted cream, engine block dark fire engine red. I'm scratching my head on this one . The engine compartment wont really look up to the level of the rest of the car in this configuration. Mostly the result of the white under hood. Was this something that was the "in" thing to do ? When do you remove tacky ?

Maybe the underside the hood paint is still the original lincoln factory paint. See if there's paint underneath it... I would ***ume that if there isn't, it's probably factory. It didn't seem like the car was ever stripped.

Or maybe it's the white color from the second version?

Maybe they louvered a different hood?

I have a feeling the engine compartment was painted black when they put the 390 in it. You could pull up that fleishman automotive tag and it would probably show what color it was when they changed the engine, which was done when it was gold.

    Stay Gold.

I would fix the door rather than replace it. The Valley Customs guys touched that door. Patches, ok, but keep as much of the original door as you can.

I'm trying to get beyond the gold version of the car . That is a given ! It must be gold.

I understand and know how to skin paint layers to get the colors and sequences
correct. While the restored car may be considered correct in the above mentioned color scheme. Is this the best way to do to the engine compartment? It just looks wrong. If period photos confirm this as correct, OK , but what will be its effect on the overall impression of the restoration ? It wasn't unusual to repaint a custom every other year or so back then. Sloppy corners and overspray would be commonplace on many of these cars . Production shops and even custom shops did not produce paint and metal work at todays high standards. How much of the old standard of workmanship would be applicable to the new work ? How much of the new standards should be applied to the effort ? Where's the line ?

I basically have to agree with Tommy. It's your money, so you get to choose which color you like best. Unless Ina May or someone else is willing to foot the bill, it aint a democracy.

Funny thing about customs, they often spent a few years at the shows, then were changed some, and went back to the shows. So the only real way to "restore" them, is to go back to the last iteration. Of course, no one back then gave a **** what the previous owner liked or didn't like, once they bought it, they customized it/painted it their way, and went on with it.

Likewise, unless you are planning to put it in a museum, or someone is paying you to "restore" it to some particular time in the past, go with your personal feelings. If you have the talent, ability and time to restore it, great.

Don't forget, Ina May wasn't too concerned when she sold it off, what happened to it. It's nice that it survived, and that you can still see some of what she was doing back then, but you don't owe her or the car anything. It's your car, make yourself happy.

I think that the under hood area is perhaps the one area that is open to a small percent of variation from what may have been the actual combo at the time of the gold version. I would think that Valley Custom probably WOULD have liked to have made all the colors under the hood match when they re-painted it gold IF the owner had wanted them to, but she may have said "naw, I don't want to spend money having you guys re-paint everything under the hood." So that is probably why such a mis-match, and also like said, some of the colors may have come around during the engine swap.
I think it is ok to do the colors the way that really seems right, like the under side of the hood in the same color as the exterior paint with splash pans & such the matte black.

Personally, I'd like to see it with a balls-out paint job. It can always age back to a more original look over the coming decades. Sweet car in all variations. Good luck

The car's specialness, even in its current state makes me wee a bit. And that Facel Vega, there aren't enough words to convey how I feel.

I agree. Given the opportunity, how do you think Valley Customs would like to see the car. Do you think they would deliberately spend time making it look less than the best they could? Show it at its best. Ever. I can only believe it would make them proud.

I think this is an excellent tie-breaker. If there's more than one possible way to finish the engine compartment, pick the one that Emory & Jensen would have most likely chosen.

    Hey Larry,
I'd have to follow your gut on this one-
A research project to figger what colours were used, and when could well
drive ya bonkers! Somewhere between "Circus Wagon Motief' " and "Ch***is
-Black," the answer will be found! I'm bettin' that no cobbie peel, dry over-
spray or painted over chipped paint will be found in any of the corners of
this job when you're finished with it.

    good luck,

    S****ey devils C.C.

FWIW... I would offer some encouragement not to sweat whether you can save the original door skin or not, just re-skin it if it makes the most sense based on time and quality (and if the Valley work done to it was minimal/reasonable, otherwise you may just have to repeat it the same way they did). I have done a couple of restorations on vintage Cobra's and it really just comes down to 'the car is still the car' regardless of a small portion of sheetmetal being replaced and doesn't change the history/pedigree of a great car like that. HOWEVER, I completely agree with everyone else, every nut, bolt, etc. must be reused/period correct if possible. It MUST look/be just like it was for the period you are going back to, very critical for historical cars like this. Makes it more fun to restore and show too!

One of the all time great customs, please keep in touch with this thread to post updates and progress!!!!!

    If you want my opinion...

The door is fixable and I don't see any reason to replace it. I would try my best only to replace items that have gone missing from the car since the time it was finished in the final gold iteration. I'd go as far as labeling each bolt, washer, spacer, etc, and try to put each one back in it's original place, unless it's damaged. Hell, even on the cars that I'm working on I try to save the original parts whenever possible, and I'm not working on anything historic or important.

As far as "where do you stop", obviously you can't keep cracked gl*** or ripped upholstery or dried out rubber. And you'll have to replace the rearend and the motor which are not original to the original build. But beyond that if it's still there I'd try to use it.

As for the paint flaws and "correct amount of sloppyness", I wouldn't intentionally try to recreate any paint flaws or sloppy details unless you can do***ent it.

Like, let's say you're stripping some paint and you see that the bolt heads that attatched that part were painted over. Then I would paint over those bolt heads as part of the restoration. Or maybe you find some old show pictures that show that they just blacked out the engine compartment instead of matching it to the car. Then I would do that as well.

But I would not intentionally leave orange peel in it or put the paint on light on the bottom edges or ignore panel gaps to make it more authentic looking unless you knew for sure that's the way it was built originally.

If you come to a point in the build where you don't know how far to take it, just ***ume it was done to the highest standards of the time, unless you know from research that it wasn't done so. (I hope that makes sense, it does to me but I'm terrible at explaining things)

  30. To clarify things, the boys at Valley Custom did not design the customizing of the Lincoln. My mother, Ina Mae Overman, designed it and Valley Custom wonderfully executed those designs.

Check out this other thread on the H.A.M.B. to view posts I've made over the past two years about the history of the car.
