I want to use a pre EGR intake to replace the smog manifold on a sbc. I figure I can tape of the ports ect and sand blast the top side but what about the rest? Are there any rust removers out there that are affordable? I understand 'hot tanking' wont remove rust. Any ideas?

  2. I sandblast the whole thing even IN the ports.
I would think a guy could miss a muddobber nest if you didn't [IMG]
Of cours you want to be sure and blow it out good so as to remove all sand and then wash it with soap and water at a car wash etc..before drying it to paint.
I also remove the riveted on splash pan on the boto as there is a slug of hard black crystalized oil residue under that damned deal! [IMG]

A friend built an engine in Phoenix and had it chemically derusted there. Would be the best way. I can check with him if interested.

Ive always heard sand blasting ports ect. was bad because the pores in the cast iron trap little particles that are almost impossible to remove but will dislodge over time to do a number on your rings, bearings ect.
I was hopeing to find something I could do at home but if commercial stripping isnt too expensive I might give it a try. This is all about a VERY low buck project. Im trying for better mpg and perfomance with little or no cash outlay. Arnt we all!

You an try a product called Evapo-Rust it is a non toxic non acidic fluid that you submerge the rusted part in. It will remove all rust inside and out. It also acts like a anti-rust agent in case it sits for a couple weeks uncoated. Do a search on Google, they have a web site. This stuff wont remove any metal so it wont harm the gasket surfaces.
