wow,i can't beleive how easy it is to revese the eyes on your spring...i had what looked to be a stock 32 font spring..about 7.5 inches height from the center of the eye to the top of the spring....i reversed the main leaf and took off the top leaf and i am now at 5.75...all i id was take the main "table" off my press..sit it in the dirt so that i had 2fixed points about 6 inches apart...then had my dad swinging the sledge hammer while moved the spring back and forth and evetually it reversed the arc in the sring and inturn reversed the eyes...saved me $50 or whatever it is for a main leaf and lowered my car just to where i wanted it in the front...just make sue you draw a chalk outline of the spring on the floor so you can get the arc back to where it should be...i couldn't find any posts about this so i thought id post it...didnt take pictres along the way though...but i may do the rear now so i will if i do that if anyone wants to see it...it is in an old hot rod mag from the 40's or early 50's that i had and i remembered seeing it when reading that and i was talking to someone and they did something similar so i figured no better time then now to go for it
I reversed the front spring main leaf in 75 using the same 6-8in spread except used a hyd press, a little easier I think. Its still in the car today, no problems 29 years later.
That's exactly the way a spring shop would do it! I used to form 3 and 4 inch truck springs like that when I was a lot younger! We had a steel forming block with a trough in it and a BFH. Hard work even now.
A timely post indeed as I was just pondering reversing the eyes on the springs on my 30 Buick. Thanks for the info.
We reverse them on a roller in our metal shop, no telling how many in 40 odd years. Not so many these days because of the IFS craze, but it's about a 15 min. job.
