Ya know...Seein' as how this truck IS in your family since it was new and seein' as how we have a load of magazine types crowding around their screens checkin' this place out... Well, it seems to me that we just might have the basis of a feature story highlighting the terrible problem of CLASSIC AUTO THEFT... with your pickup as the prime example!
    Reward offered...
Strangers who only know each other thru a HOT ROD message board adding to the reward...
Interstate and interprovincial rodders on a quest...
    INTERNATIONAL rodders on a quest...
    Stuff like that. [IMG]

This is the type of HUMAN INTEREST story that NEEDS telling.
HAMBers helping HAMBers... Thats the glue that binds this place.
    Lets find the truck.

Novel Idea! I can just see it now.......the photo at the top of this thread on the cover of Hot Rod, R&C, Street Rodder and Cruisin, the Northwest's rodder mag. Now, THAT would really put the heat on the mo-fo's that filched my truck!

Rocky, we started papering Wamic with a reward poster, we will be accessing the biker clubs that are affiliated with the local chapter of the Vietnam Vets motorcycle association and asking them to post it on theoir sites and get even more eyes searching. have added my phone number as a contact on your poster so it has a local area code.If you've come up with a better poster please send it my way.

years ago used to hang out at a gas station in North Portland {Hal's 76} ans on more than one occassion thieves would roll in trying to hawk their garbage. Hal would run them off and from then on refuse them service. Wisely he would always remind us that if no one bought goods from thieves they would soon have to stop stealing to make a living. that simple advise has always stuck with me.

    Hey Rocky:
Man that just sucks. I live in Maryland and attend a lot of shows in the tri state (Maryland-Virginia-Deleware) area. I am making a banner and will display it at every event that I attend. Hope it helps.

Rocky, am I missing something here but didnt you say once that you didnt know the VIN?
Has it been located yet; you got an old plate or anything that can be used to trace back thru the DMV?
All the flyers in the world wont help without the VIN to prosecute the perp. Dirtball can thumb his nose at you and the cops unless there is lawyer proof documented evidence to otherwise ID the truck or its parts.

sorry for my ignorance, but what obvious reasons? the truck is already stolen. the wanker that took it already knows the vin. now if it was safe and sound in your garage i could see the concern for the vin being out. i'd send a letter with that vin to every old car magazine out there.

Rocky- been following this with a heavy heart. Most of us are lucky if we have old family photos, you actually have a peice of your family history there. I really hope you find them with or without the cops. I know it's a tiny chance of it ever showing around here, but I'll keep my eyes open. What about giving a partial VIN (last couple #s or something, enough that it would raise the red flag in case it gets painted or parted.

and just where on a model A is the vin number located? for us ignorant ones..........

  19. The VIN # is on the left frame rail behind the front body mount bolt hole.
That's what the local Model A guys tell me.

All of which means you ain't gonna see an "A" VIN unless the body is loosened and raised up.

Unless the pickup went into an enclosed trailer we'll have to hope that somebody saw it going down the road and once the word - pics etc. - gets out that same somebody will remember and we'll have some clues.

I'd bet that it was stolen locally and further bet it's not too far from home.

Rocky, do you have a bud with a pilots license?
A few bucks worth of gas and the plane rental if required could have you covering a lot of ground.
It was amazing how many old cars and big yards full of cars sitting back in on farms that I found while flying.

Even with no pilot friends, more than likely you can find a local pilot or instructor pilot who'd give you a hand for the cost of the plane and/or the gas.

A little research with local Model A resto guys may give you some clues on where to concentrate an air search.

I'm sure hoping it gets spotted and I hope it's a HAMB member who does the spotting. . . .

Jay..yeah, mydad's old boss lives in the area and pilots a small plane. I'll ask him for a fly-over to check for any gray model A pickups....good idea...still haven't found the damn title. Had to pay bills and do a few home projects last night...maybe look again tonight. CRS is a terrible thing. I know I have the title in an envelope right where I put it......uhhhhhhhhhhhh

From the factory, the VIN number was stamped on the front drivers side of the motor, and C9 is correct about the other location... on the frame just behind the drivers side body mounting hole. You do have to lift the body off the frame to see it, and usually it's too rusted away there to see.

So.... VIN numbers were usually recorded from the block. Now, it's pretty crazy to find a model a with a 4 banger in it that is original to the car.

I never got a chance to look and record the block number but I believe it's the original engine. It was freshened up in 1987 with a tear-down and new gaskets. When I asked my father what kind of new rings and bearings he used, he laughed and said he mic'd everything and found the parts to be in tolerance...simply reassembled the engine with all the original parts! It ran like a fine watch and did not smoke or have blowby. Pocketa, pocketa, pocketa, etc.

Still searching for the title, Al. I put it in the magic place where nobody but me would look...know what I mean? I mean I forgot where the hell I hid it! A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

    Rocky,

I copied the picture of the truck and will contact the publisher of the Crusin News that is published here in Sacramento and see if we can't get it in ink. That publication gets distributed all over the west coast. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. The suggestion from Killer re: Hemmings is a good one too. You do the foot work on that one.

    I'll keep you posted.

A million thank-you's, Al. That's the one publication that's a west-coast only rag and I really believe the little truck is still in the west.I'll contact Hemmings to place a photo and description...........

Rocky, I live here south Puget Sound and know most everybody around thats into model a's and you can believe that if we hear of your truck or parts that may be yours I'll notify you. How was it that this guy had the chance to steal your truck?

Superbell...when my father died, his place was left unattended except for aged, deaf neighbors. All other family members had left the area years ago for a better shot at a good job elsewhere...It was simply pushed out of a locked shed and a new lock had been snapped in place to give the impression of never having been disturbed.
I broke the cheesy new lock off, kept it and when I find the perpetrators of this crime, I'd really like to give it back to them.......my own special way.
