That vintage closed sign from a fosters freeze drive in, is rare! Great shots of a great shop indeed!
Maybe this is common knowledge that I just missed, but where does the name Rex come from? I've always wondered about that...
"REX" is Latin for the word "KING". How ever "WRECKS", purely as a smart ass way to say "REX" might have a place in the automotive realm! Everyone's results may vary greatly!
Cools shots of a cool shop. The microwave shot reminds me of Max Headroom, the lonely Bridgeport looks to be waiting for @Moriarity and Co to come do a little striping. Dan
This is kind of fun for camera nerds. One of these shots was taken with a digital camera on loan. It features a sensor that only shoots black and white and you can control grain with ISO. It's the most film feeling digital I've ever used - straight out of camera. Crazy expensive, but I'd argue worth it. The other shot was taken with a WWII era Leica camera using Tri-X 400. Super cheap... and a huge pain in the ass to use. But I'd also argue worth it just because you can get lucky every now and then a create something special. I'm not gonna tell ya which is which... Though you can figure it out just by comparing the field of view with the shot I already featured.
Dangit, Ryan. While I don't have cameras as interesting as yours, you're making me wonder where my old '70s Pentax 35mm got stashed, and making me want to get some film and start using it again.
Very nice pix! The old man was chief photog for the local daily and evening newspapers so naturally I got the bug when he let me go to work with him! I have some old Nikon stuff that I used when I freelanced. I also have flash guns, strobes, light meters, slide protectors and collected some old Kodak and Polaroid cameras, darkroom stuff, and 2) 4X5 Speed Graphics cameras. I also inherited about 5k B&W negs of his from his time at the paper. Unfortunately I just don't use the stuff anymore, and certainly don't miss lugging it around at the race tracks. Going to see if the nephew wants anything. Keep up with the Leica and the Tri-X! Do you process your own film? Used to almost be able to do B&W in my sleep.
Great pictures. On my best day with a digital camera mine look like a 4 year-old took them. Love the old Bridgeport. Looks like the one the machine shop forman let us non-machinists use back in the 70's. And then he'd still keep an eye on us!
I like that we get to see the reflection of you in your art as a photographer and in the microwave.....
excellent pictures, a real feel of a moment in time captured. very clean shop too, there must be another space for all the stuff it takes to support that many projects at once. I know it translates as king but the name Rex makes me think cat, tyrannosaurus, or even rabbit.. all relatable in a way to hot rods
