Hey, I was wondering...does anyone know when the aluminum ribbed bumpers were first introduced... Was it a 50's thing or 60's.... I have always kinda liked them and you don't see them much anymore. I wanna say I have seen the ads for them in the older speed and custom magazines.... Anyone?

I thought the ribbed aluminum bumpers appeared during the 70's with the advent of billet and street rods. I think the 49 Plymouth had ribbed steel bumpers.

I'd say the Briz ribbed bumpers first appeared about 1980. Actual Desoto ribbed bumpers were from 1937.

Mine came off a '49 Plymouth. I have them leaning in the corner of the shop waiting for a worthy project.

If you are thinking of the Desoto bumpers, they have been used all the way back to the 40's. I have one on the front of my 47'

The '37 Desoto five rib bumpers were popular on customs back in the day. real steel with real chrome. The three rib '49 Plymouth, real also, were popular in the '50's. My buddy searched all over for a set of Desoto bumpers in decent shape back in the early '60's for his '48 coupe. No luck...

The Briz bumpers are an aluminum knock-off and can be had in both five rib and three rib. They are available in several styles to fit your pleasure...
