sorry i might be retarded then . cause i looked and did not see it ... can you post it ?.... sorry .....

shit just tried again and it went right to it ..... before it just went to the sight ..... see i told ya about the retarded thing ....

  2. lownslow, the superior tubing is that same stuff from the pepboys, zinc coated. The only thing is that a long time ago you can can get it from 1.5" to about 2.25" diameters in 4 foot length. that online parts place doesn't say what diameter it is. Once again if anyone is using this just sand blast or chemically dip to get the coating off.

  3. I have two lengths that I got at Hershey this year, found it under the table of an old bikers spot. I was excited as I keep my eyes peeled for this old ribbed stuff all the time. Building an old pan with a lot of little tricks.
There also is some in the Grizzly Tools catalog, not sure it the same stuff, thought it was, but with a closer look it looks like the other stuff you all are showing. Which I don't believe is the same stuff, could be wrong. It just seems to be a thinner wall or more flexable. Somtimes the new stuffs ribs are'nt as round either, a little more squared off. The Grizzly crap is over a 100 bucks a length.
On another note, check this stuff out, you may have all seen this stuff before. I had never seen it before I layed my eyes on it up in the rafters of an old Harley collector. He would'nt come off anything, but for some reason, he sold me these. He tells me some ole friend made them way back when. I have since seen them on the wall of a bike shop somewhere and on a bike in Japan, amazing how they get all this cool stuff.
There is a steel yard down the street from me, well the biker that runs the joint said he would trade me a 35 foot steel I-beam which he knows I want to put a loft in my garage for these babies. I'm gonna keep em.

sorry boys, forgot to mention that i found the stuff at Pep Boys. but i'm sure alot of you guys can find the stuff elsewhere as in anyparts store. i will tell you this though. i went to the counter guy and asked him to type in the part # for the pipe. nothing showed up so he calls over his manager, he asks what i'm looking for i told him flex pipe the long sticks of it. he says come to the back with him. he shows me a nice little stash of sticks of ripple pipe. he says the stuffs their cause no one buys it. it's also no longer in their system so make sure you ask the parts store if maybe they have some laying in the back thats not out front with the regular exhaust cut outs and piping. so i've been searching high and low for this stuff for a few years now and it turns out all i had to was ask the right parts guy

Parts america sent me an email back.

    No longer available.

Guess I am back to the drawing board.

If anyone finds it somewhere and wants to make a few bucks to send it to me I would glady pay for it.

    This is a good thread.

    We went from:
    "You can't get it anymore."

    To:
    "I found it!"

And we got a manufacturer, parts numbers, and various places to buy it.

    NICE.

yes this is the best thread on this yet . i asked before here and most had no idea what i was even talking about ... the superior stuff is not the real deal from the 50s and 60s but it will work .... the real stuff from back in the day is next to impossible to come by .and a bit different from this stuff .but i just placed an order as well .... i ordered from the first place said to have had it and also got an email saying no longer selling it . but this new site looks promising . thaks for the link .....

Hey Tuck, watch Choppertown the sinners, one of the bikes uses it. I believe they said it's some sort of semi-flexible plumbing pipe?

That's the worst flex pipe ever. That stuff doesn't bend well, just sort of kinks. So it may dissapear some day. So get it while you can. I have a set of vintage rippled lakes pipes and you can see they were pressed with a 2 part die. The ripples are alot smaller than the flex pipe.

If you are using flex pipe for lakes pipes or a motorcycle exhaust how do you make it "inflexible" after you weld the rest of the exhaust system to it? I'm trying to use a straight piece as a visual detail between the header pipe and a cocktail shaker muffler on a chop I'm building. Both the head pipe and muffler will be welded and the entire system chromed afterwards. The rippled portion will have to support the weight of the muffler since the exhaust mounts to the frame before the rippled section. does the chroming process solidify the flex pipe or does it need to be welded somehow?

    Thx,

    Scott

Kanaka, the rippled section is actually pretty stiff, it should be fine.

yep... as james said, conveluted tubing is pretty rigid ... unless you plan to use it structuraly i wouldn't sweat it

this stuff gives me WAY too many ideas :D

that stuff is cool, but it's totally different than what fenton(pepboys) and others were selling in the day. I found some original chrome rippled pipes on ebay about ten years ago and used them for bellflowers on my chopped '60 olds, havent seen any for sale since then, but it should be possible to make the tooling to reproduce the original style. I would love to see that available again.....

not true, i know what the old stuff looks like, their is actually a guy on ebay who pops up now and then and sells small sections of new rippled pipe but its not cheap. only reason why i decided to use the other flex pipe was cause of its availability.

here's what the real stuff looks like, you have to look close...

    and another set...

  27. That convoluted pipe is still at a lot of pepboy's in the back. Even some Autozones.
For the real deal ripple pipes I'd just hit Pomona swap, I've seen them there a couple of times for about 150.00-200 bucks.
And NO the Japanese Mooneye store does not have them, nor is Mooneyes USA re-introducing them, the original style ribbed lakes pipes.

well looks like you guys found what you wanted butt i still want to putt in my 2 cents you can make stuff like this in a brake press. thats how we make pipes fit inside each other at work. you just just make the tooling and squash it. for just making a couple you could easily make the tooling out of mild steel thick walled tubing two halves. then lay like rings where you want the ripples and weld them in place make a top and a bottom you'll have to weld a key on each so they will go in the brake press. the only problem i see is maybe a line where the two halves meet but i'm shur it could be hand worked.
