I am getting ready to paint the suspension, frame, and axles on my '58-'59 ear 32 roadster B/SR build. The body is Winterleaf brown light. I note that most of the actual drag cars used black frames, but often had contrasting color motors and suspension. I have seen red, orange, mustard yellow, and other colors used and am leaning towards red, but there are a million shades available. What would likely be most "correct" for this era build? Vermillion red? Flame red? Also, you guys with good eyes for color, will the black frame and colored parts be too many colors when combined with my already-painted light brown body? I put a steel body on this 32 for my dad and got the glass body for my efforts. Here is a pic for reference on the color. Thanks!
This beautiful 32 is the same color as mine with red wheels, etc. Looks pretty good to me, Richard D! Maybe I'm just "color challenged", but I think that that is the color they call Winterleaf Brown Light. Regardless, I think it looks pretty good with the correct shade of red. Anyone know what color red it is?
i think that'd look like****, but that's me... red suspension, frame and axles is what you said... nothing about wheels.
Wheels are different but I think the wheels on that 32 would look better black. A bunch of random chassis parts painted red, man I just don't see how it could look that good.
The frame will be black. The engine block, wheels (probably with moon discs) will likely be red. Just not sure about the front axle, bones, ladder bars and olds rearend. Black may still be the ticket for all of them.
I've never been crazy about the body and frame on a Deuce being two different colors,,and I'm not a member of the black wheel mafia but in this case I think black is the way to go. HRP
In my old 57-60 mags, I just almost never see a body color frame on a race car 32 roadster. On "show" cars, yes. I do see quite a few with light (white?) front and/or rear axles and suspension, and sometimes, firewall. A few have the frames, roll bars, engines, and suspension painted one color and a contrasting (usually lighter colored) body, hood, and radiator. I painted my chopped model A hot rod front suspension white back in the early 70's, but it was probably because that looked like the competition coupes of the day.
No but the engine is a different shade or red and the darker red looks better against the light tanish beigeie color than the wheels do to me. I don't think*****tered dobs of color will look good no matter what the color and the more colors you have the worse it will be. Ever notice how less is more on these hot rods? Customs are a different story.
I don't know what would be "period correct", but if I wanted the frame/suspension a color other that black, I would consider the color on the top of the garbage can off to the right in the original picture.(dark rusty maroon) Wheels would have to be painted that color also.
I disagree... less is more applies to customs as well I think you should keep it simple and do all black, if you want some contrast.. some dark red wheels would look nice.
