so i just got done re-ringing my 292 y-block. it runs great, nice and smooth, does not miss like it did. the problem is it smokes pretty bad from the oil filler, dipstick tube and road draft. i honed it, I'm sure i installed the rings correctly, i checked for cylinder taper. it all went together great. this is the first time I've done this kind of job so I'm curious if this is somewhat normal till the rings seat and what should i do to get them to seat. or is something pretty well messed up and i should try again?
plain cast , moly , chrome? when i said ring groove i mean the ridge on top of the cylinder bore left by the old rings
I'm not sure i just installed what the parts counter gave me, they had a flat black finish the box and car are at the inlaws. i'll check tomorrow. as far as the ring groove, i removed most of it, there was a little left that did not seem to want to go away no matter how long i went over it. but you could hardly see it. and could not feel it at all.
Cross hatch of 60 degrees in your hone pattern ? .012 - .016 end gap ? Ring land wear ? Standard rings in overbored cylinders ?
.... it smokes pretty bad from the oil filler, dipstick tube and road draft. No smoke from the exhaust??? It seems there would be if it was rings. Are you sure it is not steam? Maybe a coolant leak into the pan. Check compression.
So, judging by your replies something is fucked up and its going to be more than just getting them to break in.
