Cpl. Dixon was a local man and it's been all over the news the last couple days. It's been a long time since we've had a local soilder go to the big battlefield in the sky. We all feel it here in Dayton.

My brother Lil John and I have a brother who served in the first Gulf War and that same brother's wife in the second Gulf War. Not a day goes by that I think we're a**** the lucky ones.

    God speed Cpl. Dixon.

It is so easy to listen to the news, hear about another whatevernumber of soldiers killed today during combat, and just put it off in p***ing. Even the news reports show a 'disconnected' view of who is killed and what happened.

It is one of my pet peeves and really chaps my ***.

I think that for each and every servicemember hurt, maimed, or killed while in a combat situation (or acting in the faith of our fearless leaders) should be spoken of in the manner listed in the first post of this thread. Further, those men in command - 95% who've never lived or served as an enlisted man - should be forced to view and hear about the lives lost due to their 'just war'.

I'm no liberal, nor am I a true pacifist. I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots." War is a necessary evil, but since this is so, lets make those in control THINK about what is going on beforehand, and suffer the consequences of their actions afterwards.

They are individuals with families and friends, not numbers to be thrown at an objective.

RIP Cpl. Dixon. May your legacy live on through the minds of your loved ones, and may your loss not have been in vain.

    Tears.

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were.

A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back.

Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit.

The complaint: 'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low p*** over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns' early bird special? Any response would be appreciated.'

    The response:

Regarding a wake-up call from Luke's jets' (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship fly by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a.m.on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects. The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show?' The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you.....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr. USAF

On the Korean War Memorial is the inscription "Freedom is not free". Let us all remember that and honor those that serve and pay the ultimate price.

While my son was playing in the Babe Ruth World Series this summer I had the chance to take him to Arlington National Cemetary. It made a huge impression on him that those men and women had died so he had the freedom to play a game. He asked to go back again before we went home.

Cpl. Derek C. Dixon made it to Arlington.

    God Bless and Keep Him.

When you grow up in a small town you have 3 choices. Stay and work for a friend or family member. Leave and go to college. Leave and go to the military. We see it as an escape from the 'stupid, boring' small town life. I went to college and have travelled the world but have come home to my same small town. I know a guy who left his small town and went to college via ROTC. He just went home to his small town 2 years ago when someone fired a rocket into his Apache in Iraq.

Thank you boys. You are men in the face of God.

Every life lost to this war is a tragedy. But, their families should have comfort knowing that their son or daughter left this world as a HERO and died for something they believed in.

  28. Bless all that serve, along with their families. We owe them more than we can ever repay. Prayers are sent for them all.

To the original poster Joe, DO NOT EVER apologize for posting something like this, it needs to be on every and all message boards !!!

I know that some times war is necesary, but would we have as many, if each Congressman or Senator was required to serve on the front lines?
