This sucks. And its kinda a creepy that the rodders journel just came out with the repop feature of his streamliner. Hope he got to see the feature before he left us.
Well said. If you are a fan of high quality fabrication, Phil was a legend. I firmly believe that Phil's vision and execution changed the way racecars are built to this day. His attention to detail and his eye for safety and quality set the standard. There's a reason why another genuis, Dan Gurney, kept Phil on his payroll at AAR to the very end. He was a treasure. RIP Mr. Remington.....
Mr. Remington could do it all. Just finished reading about him in my TRJ. Got online and did more research on him. What history! Man did he know how to engineer, design & fabricate He looked at problems as opportunities & resolved them all. He was true hot rodder. God bless him and his family. Thank you Phil.
His Roadster was just featured in the Rodders Journal on the cover plus a great article about Phil. I knew him through the Hillborn Injection folks who came out to the Drags at LIONS, San Fernando and Colton. He was a very talented man as that specific car will attest to. He will be missed by many. RIP! Thankfully some of his work is already in a Museum. Normbc9
It was a true privilege to know Rem. Incredible fabricator, he made the world's best fabricators jealous and awestruck. Brilliant self-taught engineer, fixed the Ford GT's brakes when Ford's rocket scientists couldn't. Sharpest memory I ever saw, could call out frame dimensions from 1949. I am no good at obituaries. Instead, here's a piece about Rem I wrote in 2002: Phil Remington, 1921-2013 | Mac's Motor City Garage.com
From what I read about the man he could not have taken much time to rest. He did it all wide open! Its now his time to rest. We are loosing the great ones.
Wow. Another icon lost to time. I'll never forget the the quote I read, but cannot for the life of me remember who said this, but it was said of Phil 'he was so talented that could weld wood if he wanted' or something like that. RIP Phil, God Bless. You left the world a better place because of you.
Carroll Smith once said that Rem was the greatest fabricator in the world, and thats not his strong point. That's a pretty good description.
It was always so cool to see and hear about Rem showing up for work at Gurney's everyday just like the young guys, only he was 92 years old! Talk about a life well lived!!! Godspeed.
Carrol Shelby said of Remington: "He's the best fabricator in the world and that's not even his best quality." I just recently bought the new Rodders Journal and have been thinking about painting my new project the same color as his Lakes Modified. I guess I'll go ahead and do that to honor the man and his contribution to an obsession that I happen to share.
Another major loss to our sport. He was "jack" of all trades and "master" of all trades. R.I.P. brother ~sololobo~
We are sad to hear of the passing of a great friend and true craftsman. Over the weekend the hot rodding world lost one of its pioneers. Phil Remington passed away at the age of 92. Thank you to Phil and his family for allowing us to recreate his car and to The Rodder's Journal for featuring Phil's career in the current issue. R.I.P. Just read the TRJ article this morning. I'm glad, at the very least, that so many of us are aware of his influence now. What an impact this man had on the entire sport and hobby. Thanks and RIP Phil, you'll always be around!
Indeed a true icon & pioneer in all things motor racing , I had the honor of meeting him at the Dan Webb do to introduce his recreated streamliner. He was a Vulture (as am I now ) & to hear Phil, Isky & Stuart Hilborn bench race stood beside his streamliner is a memory I'll cherish forever. Rest In Peace Phil .
