I am putting together a ‘41 Ford sedan as a mild custom in the ‘48-‘52 style. I think most of what I am doing will suit the build. I have a section of ripple pipe and am wondering if this was used for exhaust tips in that period. If anyone can include photos that would help. Thanks in advance Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I remember seeing them in show cars in the 50’s/60’s but let me go through my little mags . I am sure someone on here will give you , your answer before .
there was threads about this way back when... most call it ribbed, you know for pleasure. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search/235863934/?q=ribbed+exhaust&o=relevance https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ribbed-exhaust-pipe-how-would-you-duplicate-this.160124/
ribbed, like chambered ? For a modicum of silencing in Chevy's "Off-road" exhausts ? https://www.southerncarparts.com/c3-1968-1982-corvette-allens-chambered-exhaust-systems.html Or ribbed, like bendable exhaust tubing ? https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/WLoAAOSwbElZbWtF/s-l500.jpg
Neither. Old-school ripple pipes were not mufflers, just stylized tubing, and they were not flexible. The either had concentric bulges, or a spiral bulge, around the pipe. @Bandit Billy has the spiral style, shown in the previous post. Here's the concentric rib style:
I believe the OP is talking rippled exhaust tips, not lakes pipes/plugs. I think rippled tips or pipes are more of a late 50's early 60's thing. Mick
I have seen the Ripple Exhaust Tips for Sale on E**y from time to time.. But its always just singles here and there.. never a pair..
A search for Ripple exhaust tips shows some that a Bike parts outfit did make in 1-3/4 but their website doesn't show if they still make them. Don't get mad at the messenger if they don't make or sell these anymore. The Factory metal works website link is under the photo of the tips but as far as I can figure the article was originally done in 2011 https://www.streetchopperweb.com/factory-metal-works-bolt-ripple-exhaust-tips I don't ever remember seeing ripple exhaust tips on a car. Most of the guys around here ran flair tip or pencil tip I've always liked the clean look of the pencil tip with no sharp edges myself. I cut my shin on a slant cut tip on a friend's car when I was helping him load something in the trunk years ago and that burned me on that style.
My sister's boyfriend had a Shoebox Ford with the rippled 3 outlet lake pipes, that was back in the late 50's. I don't recall seeing them as exhaust tip's. Night Prowlers was selling the lake pipe's and 3 different lengths of rippled pipes. They were pretty expensive, $780.00 for the pair of lakes.
I got my pipes from this guy that's on here a lot with a wicked car collection and a bunch of really cool parts in what used to be a house but now more of a museum. Don't recall his handle. They are (were) NOS stuff from a ways back.
Not sure but I got a section or two - maybe 4ft at the local Pep Boys for some dual's.....Stillrunning on o'Blue my F150..........
Mooneyes has sections in stock https://www.mooneyesusa.com/product-p/bktfmw001.htm Thank you, Mike Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Saw a pic of these same kickstand ripple pipes in a little book from ‘56. As far as a modern day source I’m not sure.
I was planning on doing the same with my F2 once I drop the front axle. Do you have them hooked up or just for show? Don’t know if I’m gonna.
Nobody on the west coast ran them in the 50's, they ran long plain "Side pipes" to make the car look lower. Get the long plain chrome ones.
At the moment they are not operational. I have them on v band clamps and they are designed to hook up easily. I will wait until final****embly and see where my wife's legs hit getting in and out of the truck.
