There are miles and miles of historic 66 in Oklahoma, very nice drive today. We've traveled over 2,600 miles so far mostly on two lane US 30 And RT 66. Gas is less than $2.00 per gal. Some pictures of the road.

    The museum at Clinton Ok. is well done and worth a stop. DSCF3195.JPG DSCF3197.JPG DSCF3198.JPG DSCF3199.JPG DSCF3200.JPG DSCF3201.JPG DSCF3202.JPG DSCF3203.JPG DSCF3204.JPG DSCF3205.JPG DSCF3206.JPG DSCF3207.JPG DSCF3208.JPG DSCF3209.JPG DSCF3210.JPG DSCF3211.JPG DSCF3212.JPG

Mike...sounds like you and your wife are having a great trip. I go past the Clinton Museum all too often...the closest casino to Amarillo is just down the street a few miles past the museum, lol. I think you'll enjoy the Elk City museum. When you get to Shamrock, Texas, the restored Conoco(?) gas station that a previous poster mentioned is just past the McDonalds heading south. BTW, if you were to keep going south on that road for an hour or so, you'd run into Owens Salvage in Wellington....a favorite supplier for many Hambers. If you are religious, a stop in Groom at the largest cross in the western hemisphere will be well worth your time. It's right on I40. If you do the rt 66 thing in Amarillo, you'll be on 6th street 1 1/2 blocks from my house. Hope you post pics of Bill's Backyard Classics...that place needs some exposure.

Went to the Museum complex in elk city, nicely done but the Rt 66 Museum is only a small part of it. There's a lot to see but I'll only post the 66 part.

Then on to Amarillo TX. for the night. Saw some things along the way. Most of 66 is frontage roads along side I 40 with side trips on the alignments that go through small towns, we are getting better at staying on the old route, I like the slower pace on the frontage roads. Some times we get a glimpse of an earlier alignment that has been abandoned and over grown.

Well that didn't work the way I expected it to. Had lunch in Shamrock and saw the restored station. Who ever recommended Big Vern's Steak house was right, great food. There was some concern about Shamrock on another thread, not to worry there's a lot to see there and folks are friendly. In case you're wondering about the spray painting/grafitti. That started at the Cadilac Ranch years ago...was actually encouraged there, so bring along a spray bomb and add your name. Got to be hundreds of layers

Or I could just scratch my mark in the paint that's there. I've seen lots of places where they leave markers out for people to leave a mark. My name is on the***** house door at Carrol Shelby's shop in Vegas.

we are in Santa Rosa Nm. tonight. Went t Bill's backyard Classics this mourning. WOW! what a collection, I'll pst a million pictures later this evening. I met bill and his wife and sons. They drive every car on a 30 day rotation and start them weekly. Then on to the Cadillac Ranch, other than being an old RT.66 attraction this is nothing special, just looks like a mess to me. Got out my cutamajig and started carving to see how thick the pant was, never reached metal after a little over an inch deep DSCF3391.JPG DSCF3393.JPG DSCF3394.JPG DSCF3395.JPG DSCF3397.JPG DSCF3398.JPG DSCF3399.JPG .

Just past the beat up remains of the old Longhorn Motel at the state line the old rout turns to dirt so we back tracked and crossed in to New Mexico on I 40.

The old rout turned to***** for a little bit, but it got better. Looked like we just missed some flooding. Don't worry you can always back track and bypass the places you don't want to take your car on I 40. This is the wife's car so I just forged on.

The Blue Swallow motel...in Tucemcarie?, and do you remember where the 2 story filling station was?
Bill's Backyard Classics...I think if I walked in there and won the grand door prize (just dreaming) of being allowed to take home one car, I'd have a nervous breakdown trying to figure out which ONE I wanted. The black 64 Starfire would have to be one of the finalists, or maybe the burgundy pinstripped '57(?) Caddy, or, no...the '58 dark silver Chieftan, or.....

The 1920's Magnolia gas station was in Vega Nm. The Blue Swallow is in Tucumcari. the dirt road section (formerly paved) is from Glenrio to San Jon.

There's another Auto museum just down the street from here that looks good so I'll visit it Saturday.
