Minnesota Route 61 along the North Shore of the Big Lake from Two Harbors to the border is still pretty good. MN-DOT has done a good job of safety-fying it in the last couple decades so it is not as good a drive as it used to be, but the scenery is still top shelf. Just avoid tourist season.

MN Route 113, between US 59 and US 71 is one of the twistiest roads in the country. Zig-zags between dozens of glacial lakes. Great for Fall color viewing.

US212 - Beartooth Pass, Montana often gets overlooked since it is only open April to October. But if you have the stones, it is a great drive.

There must be a thousand roads in California that are great for "spirited" driving. Such as Hwy 1, aka Pacific Coast Hwy, from Moro Bay to Monterey, one of the most beautiful and fun stretches of road you will find. And then there is the famous (infamous) Angeles Crest Hwy, or Mulholland Hwy, though those are all can be pretty heavily traveled at times, with too many tourists in motor homes, and squid motorcycle riders (Sundays are the worst days for that). Local to me there is a sweet little canyon road known as Live Oak Canyon Road. Check it out here on a leisure drive with the wife in the car (I tend to take it easy with her in it)

  5. I was on the way back from VA to KY and at like 5 on a Sunday I ran across these wonderful broad sweeping tall banked curves EMPTY just west of the Cumberland Gap. Road was damp so I couldn't get crazy but my OT daily was fun doing about 90. Would loved to have run 130+ but the water and small town around it made me stay sensible. Local hill people make me cautious even though my family is from the hills. I was in a flashy car, too. Looks out of place. Appalachian mountains has some great roads. And that's just about the tail end out the mountain range though it does extend into GA.

You have to drive it at night to avoid heavy traffic but 501 leading up to the Peaks of Otter outside Lynchburg is fun... there's some deeply banked gravel roads out in the countryside that you can have some fun on, too. Trouble is, there's too much traffic to get too squirrelly.... 29 north out of Amherst might be good now that they built a new bypass to take the heavy shit. Nice long straights to wind 'em out.....

The problem is most of those roads don't have very many passing zones so all you are doing is catching up with the slow drivers quicker. Ah, but when I can!
