Just like the geese and cranes gathering in the cornfields around us, the roadsters are getting ready to fly south for the winter too. This year we're flying down (we have a daily driver there) and having the roadster transported. This has been nerve wracking for me for a couple reasons (I know they're silly, but still...), but I'm coming to grips with the idea. To be honest, we've not driven it much this past summer season, putting maybe 500 miles on it. The past couple months it hasn't moved at all, because after my recent hip replacement getting in and out of it, even setting behind the wheel, was painful. Add to that the fact that after it sat out in the rain at the "Relix Riot" all weekend the end of August, it ran like ****. Evidently constant moisture and 25 year old plug wires don't play well together. Anyhow, my hip is feeling better, and yesterday I got a package of goodies from "Hot Heads" with new plug wires and distributor cap, and got them on. I also fiddled with the (original) carburetor, evidently my HAMB fisted attempt to tune it earlier this summer led to adjusting things until it would barely run. So, automatic choke settings back where they were, idle circuits richened back up and VIOLA! No more popping and sputtering, and it hits on all 8 cylinders now. We're having it hauled down, and will leave it there. I'll have to find climate controlled storage, but there are several places catering to exotic cars in town, so that shouldn't be a problem. I found I didn't like towing the car trailer down. Worrisome for me towing a big trailer in heavy traffic in cities on the way down (Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Cincinnati), doubled the fuel costs, an extra night of motels (and worrying about the rig setting in motel parking lots) will balance out the cost of storing it for 6 months in summer. Our home was spared any significant damage from Ian and Milton, so after I spend a week cleaning debris from the yard we should have lots of opportunity for warm weather cruising. The anxiety from that having p***ed, now I can relax a little. The beaches should be opened up again, restaurants are opening back up, my buddies in the neighborhood with hot rods are all OK with no damage either, so we'll surely enjoy the car once we're there. And put more than 500 miles on it. Next week here is supposed to glorious weather, now that it's running and I can get in and out of it, we should be able to enjoy it before stashing it in my buddy's trailer for the ride. I've got lots of tinkering to do with the Impala and the wagon, so there will plenty of old man puttering in the garage time up here to keep me occupied.
