while the wheels are waiting to be sandblasted and powder coated gloss black i am working on the lack of front brakes. i have found a couple of sites that sell all new components and you pay the price. i dont want to be unsafe so i dont mind that. im just a bit miss informed or un informed as to the whole hubs / spindles thing. i got a 40 front beam but dont know what the "hub" is. sorry for my ignorance, this is my first hot rod. well, im being offered a pair of almost complete (missing hub adapters and shoes) Buick 90 fin drums with drilled and powder coated backing plates along with new cylinders and hoses. that brings me to my question, can i see some spoke wheels with finned drums? thanks. i know the rad needs to be lowered im getting there.
well, i found these pics... spoke wheels with finned drums: and this old pic of spoke wheels with no front brakes:
The hub is the part that houses the bearings and slides over the spindle. It is also the part that the drums attach to. It also has 5 lug bolts sticking out of it. Hope that helps you some. Sounds like you answered your own question about fins and spokes. Happy rodding.
Even when I squint and turn my head just right, I still can't make out what kind of hubs you have. Can you tell us the bolt pattern? Can you take a closer picture? Your potential Buick setup may bolt on fine if it has the Ford backing plates, but if it's Buick backing plates it will need adapters or other conversion. And, stock Ford wires will not bolt up to Buick drums, even with a bolt pattern change. You will need a spacer/adapter because the wheel fits tightly around the drum.
^^^ think i got it, the hub, then drum, then wheel. bolts go through all. guess a center nut holds the hubs to the spindles with inner and outer bearings? car is parked at my friends house (got no more space here) ill try and swing by to snap a closer pic. my bolt patter though is 5 x 5.5 standard ford. guess if all works i still got the spoke wheel fit to the drum face to worry about. i know what you mean, the wheel is recessed to absorb the drum face. the Buick drum face is flatter. the set-up being offered to me is on a coupe... see picture those are the brakes on the car.
