What I’m starting with.

We all know of Dean Lowe’s fabulous, red roadster pickup from back in the early 60s. We have read the history and envied the full color, cover page of the Hot Rod Magazine. So, for us, any chance to see it in action back then was missed by a few months.

Wow, in that Pomona action photo, that Impala could have been us, with the modifications we did on the motor and adding the C&O Stick Hydro. OR it may have been Tom Sturm as he was terrorizing the C/Gas class at Lions since 1959 in his Chevy Sedan. In our final race for the C/Gas eliminations, the opponent was Tom Sturm in his Impala. The 671 SBC Willys Coupe kicked his butt…

But, the results were skewed by the explosion/fire.

It was a sad day to see these classes get swallowed up and then eventually disappear. But, things happen in the coincidence world and we live with the results. History was fun in those old drag racing days as we were growing up to be productive citizens. But, if that Impala was us, that would have been quite a race…despite the results. This is one great looking and performing street roadster, Dean. So is your newer, yellow RPU.

 

That little RPU would sure look good full fenderd. ^^

 

First I've seen your post Junji. When you mentioned you and your brother ran a '58 Impala it made me think back to that race. Had there been a Christmas tree back then the result might have been different.

 

Any side views?

 

It’s just perfect the way you built it. I would not even paint it. Just throw a seat in it and enjoy it.

 

A question if you please. Are the roadster doors the same width as the rpu? Or is it the length? From the windshield to the striker door post in other words.

 

Roadster pickup and roadster doors are the same, as are the cowl portion.

 

Well thanks. That was fast. I have a 'glass '29 roadster and thought about making a mold of the cowl and the doors then making the 1/4 panel and the back out of steel. i would probably make a mold of them afterwords.

 

I like the minimalist vibe of that one above. Just enough to work but nothing more.

 

I get to be caretaker of this one for awhile !!!

Marty, Full fendered '28-'29 roadster pickups are so cool. Dave Diaz's is my favorite for several reasons.

 

Tom, I always liked the Dave Diaz RPU as well, perhaps that's one of the reasons why I am using wide 5's on mine, kind of using different elements of all the great ones.

 

I added a post to the thread asking about Diaz's pickup where I lifted the picture. I don't remember ever meeting Dave or talking to him. He surely never knew about the relationship I had with his garaged pickup. I do remember seeing him driving it around Concord a few times and falling in love with it. After all the Himsl brothers were our hot rod heroes. Diaz was older maybe late 20s or early 30s.

Here is a 1928 Model A roadster pickup that I just picked up! It is done up as a Fire Chief's car. Mostly original with the exception of a custom-made wood pickup bed. I would like to eventually replace it with steel either Henry or re-pop. Reportedly out of the late Dick Kughn collection.

 

Like how on the Diaz rdstrpu he mounted the body back farther instead of cutting the firewall for engine clearance.
