What do I need to know about Pay Pal ?
    Any problems ?
    Any catches ?
How do I actually get cash in my hands ?

I want to set up an account so I can sell some art.

    Thanks.

Personally PayPal scares me, I've done just fine on eBay for 5 years without it and see no good reason to use it. If I sell something for $100.00 I see no reason why PayPal should take $4.00 and give me $96.00, or whatever their rate is today, will be more tomorrow.

Paypal makes it easy for those of us who would not normally be able to take a credit card as payment. Its true they take their bit, but so does the credit card from them. I personally have had no problem with them, but have heard of those who have. I think for the most part its good.

Can you ever get your "money" out and get "cash" in your hand? If so how long does that take and where do you go to collect it?

  5. I have been a seller on Ebay 5 years so far,and been with PayPal since before Ebay bought them out. I have my bank acct and credit card numbers registered with them also.
I have not had a glitch in money at all Ian- it allows me to sell my wares too and the deal is consumated fast so I can ship sooner...I love it...
If I have any advice it'd be this....Never click on an attachment or answer a request for any serious info on an email.Log on the paypal site from your favorites and do it there to be sure its from them!Kenny

  7. Most of the problems were in the very early days. I don't believe that they have too many now. As far as I know the money is transfered right into your account. I used to sell a few things on eBay and have never setup an account to receive funds and I know for a fact that people backed out of purchasing something from me more then once because I didn't take paypal. I also believe that you tend to get a few more bucks for your stuff when you take paypal because there are more people interested in your auction and because of the convenience of paypal will bid a bit more to win your auction. Just my 2 cents.

<font color="green">Never had a problem with them here.

You can sign up for one of their credit cards, this way your PayPal funds are available pretty much like a debit card.

Or, like I do, you can just have the money transfered into your bank account, takes about three days if you have your account set up as an auto debit as well.

They will take 3% off the top of everything that comes in. Not sure if this figure is fixed or if they have different levels.

they actuallt take 2.9% and 30 cents, it's fixed. the 37kid brought up a good point about losing $4 of every hundred, you'll sometimes notice on e-bay that people charge a "handling" fee, this is usually to cover their expense of paypal.
i say do it, and link it to your bank account so you can withdraw the cash from paypal, and put it right into your account.
this also makes it waaay easier to sell stuff overseas and not worry about exchange rates and local bank fees for exchanging foreign currency, etc.
    it's definitely worth it.

AS far as getting your cash quick - you can get a debit card which gives you instant access to your cash in your account. They give you 1.5% back in cash for all purchases!

    Hi!

I also subscribed to paypal before ebay bought it, never had a problem. If you are willing to trade with international customers - do it. More people will bid on your items, because they don't have to worry "how to pay".
I buy and sell stuff on ebay, and yes paypal takes money for payments, but I rather have the money within a mouse-click, than wait one or two weeks until the buyer figures how to pay for an international auction - then you have to wait another week until the money of the int. bank transfer is on my account....

    best regards,
    max
