hot rods are about goin fast with what you got. i dig the 4-banger idea. cost effective, and easily availible.

anywho, how well would one of these things push a pre-47 pickup? their not too heavy, especially stripped of fenders and other un-neccesary crap. mildly built it could probly pull it around pretty good. what do ya'll think?

t-town-track-t can you please send me an email at
    coupe1942@sbcglobal.net

I have been trying to reach you to discuss your engine and tranny set up and ask some questions, but I am not sure if the personal email is working for me at this site or not.
    Thanks,
    Huey

Back in college, I bought a stripped down 1991 toyota pickup (no air, no radio, no rear bumper, manual transmission, manual steering, one mirror......stripped down basic transportation).

With no accessories to slow it down, it had PLENTY of power. The thing was a big go-kart!!!! I abused the hell out of it for several years before I lost control of it and cleaned out a ditch while sliding backwards. :)

sorry to revive a dead post but this gets my goat

    I DON'T GET HOW THIS ISN'T TRADITIONAL.

First of what "is and "isnt" traditional started in the late 80's and early 90's while people like Chip Foose and Boyd Coddington were making there names. before that, any kid with a will took an old car and crammed the best he could find and keep running into it and smiled every day he drove it.

this "traditional" crap was designed by the magazines who were paid BY THE PEOPLE SELLING YOU THE MOTORS AND PARTS!

Secondly has any one of the people bashing a 4cyl rod (for it's lack of hotrod aura) ever seen an old salt flat racer? Tons of them were tricked out 4 cylinders. most were likely run by machinists because they were the few with the skill to bring the true potential out of a 4 cyl in those days. most couldn't afford to have the work done so they used what was available that made power namely a V8.

the only reason manufacturers didn't make high output 4's back then was because the tolerances had to be much closer and that meant more detail work per engine, which in turn was more cost to build than a V8.

Now I'm not one to go full out and toss a 300hp stock mitsubishi lancer engine in (thats is bone stock on some of these new fours guys) but that is mainly because I want the sound and torque of a large displacement cylinder firing out the exhaust.

The Toyota R series motors (20r/22r/22re/22rte) are just the ticket. the piston is the same size as many of y6our old v8s. and will out perform almost any stock engine pre-1960.

and for reliability. I own a 1985 celica, the last year it was made rear wheel drive. Until 2 years ago the engine had never been opened other than the valve cover for adjustment and possibly 1 timing chain replacement. after 236,000 miles of daily driving by multiple owners, myself being especially rough on it, it finally ate the plastic timing chain guides and ate a hole in the back of my water pump. not bad for some little asian motor. I'd like to see any American V-style motor pre 1990 do that and still run like a top till the day it dies.

I still have that motor aswell. after inspection could have cleaned it out (water and oil make goo after frothed and left to sit in the vaegas heat for 2 years) put a new timing set and cover on and driven it another 100,000 miles easily.

offenhauser makes a dual plane 4 barrel intake for it that combined with a 20r head on an early 22r block and pistons, the right cam, carb, headers, and light porting. And you have an 200-250 horsepower engine with roughly the same torque. And it does it at 25MPG city 35MPG highway.

most of you low end small block guys don't have that much engine and get 1/2 or worse the gas mileage. have twice the weight

To end it heres a pic of an early 22r with dual DCOE sidedrafts. (which brodens the power band alot and brings it up to 5500 to 6000 ending curve) tell me this couldn't look right if disgused properly

when I find the right ride my old 22r will definitely be going in it. you guys want to waste gas at $5 a gallon go ahead. I think I'll drive mine to work daily with a heavier wallet.

That engine looks like it would look right in the two seat Indy style roadster that I am gathering pieces for and plan to build on a 28 Chev chassis. Without the T----- tag on top it would look pretty clean.

I imagine a lot of the guys are looking at building an interesting daily driver that will be dead on reliable and get more than decent gas mileage while looking like a "traditional" rod on the outside. It might not be the car that you take to the rod trots but it wouldn't have a gas eating v8 or use pieces made out of unobtainium either.

This '50 Study is sitting on a Toyota frame and runs all Toyota engine, trans & rear, and so what? It's dependable and gets great gas mileage.
Besides it's a KUSTOM and the only time you open the hood is to check the oil or something like that.
    I Like It!!!

Going with this quote perhaps you could dig through the archives a bit, follow some of the threads, and then revisit this particular thread concerning toyota engines and what is and isn't traditional.

Nobody gripes about four bangers here. Hell folks here rarely gripe about the nippon engines even though they're not traditional in the slightest. Hang out a bit before getting twisted.

thats my plan. and it's going to be more or less a rat rot from the planning stages. (i wont b.s. myself about my own finances i know i'm broke lol) but I want power, reliabilty, and fuel economy because I know when it's built I'll end up driving it EVERYWHERE

It was just a few early on in this thread that really got me that twisted. saying things like putting one in is a waste of effort. I know most guys on here are nice enough. and many would give you the shirt off their back. I may have a low post count, but I've been reading this forum for a few years now.

Brandon that's what you said about it 2 years ago in this thread LOL. Get to it man, I wanna see this thing.

I have thought about building a car with a foreign motor just to piss a few people off.

Some of the hemi 4 bangers from toyota kicked ass. There was one in a flip top T coupe this year at paso (sore subject) that was super rowdy....
