I think that is the San Palo Brothers from Monterey. I have a better picture of their car, but I can't find it. Dennis might know.

Thanks for posting the video! Great song choice too!
My fave is the '56 Convertible BelAir at :48 and 1:40 in the clip.

I see this thread is still going so here's a couple more pictures I dug up. This is Phil Macharella ??? and his chopped Plymouth. There is brief shot of him tearing up the strip about a third of the way through the video.

One more. These guys liked four doors. This is one was called "The Gopher". It was in the "Unfinished Custom" class at the San Jose Autorama I think it was 1957. Note the soaped windows (No Interior) and multi color primer.

The last time I saw Phil's car it was parked outside a bar on Santa Clara??? St. It was primered and looked like it was living a hard life, but it looked right at home sitting there under that street light waiting for the next round. It was about 2:00 AM and the streets were empty. I was with my pal Nielsen and we made a U turn and got out to take a look.
What I remember the most about that was someone had stuck a photo of Fats Domino to the dashboard. I thought that was so cool.

Rod P AND Franco yes that is Phil standing next to his car and the primered chopped Ford 4dr. belonged to Dick Bengiveno who was all so member of the Rod and Wheelers . The Plymouth was last bought by someone at San Jose State and the chopped Ford 4dr. went to the junk yard after some kids jumped on the roof and caved it in while it was parked at his parents house. Joe Crissifulli is the one who primered the car in his shop at home. Ahhhh for the good old days and $1.25 hour wages.

I dig the green fleetline with the white interior. Not to butt in...

  15. "And the music, "WPLJ" was recorded by 4 guys ( The Four Deuces) who worked at a car wash in Salinas. It was one of the first records I ever bought. My parents hated it."

I've been looking for a copy of that for a long time.

78!! How old is that record?

Reason I ask is I remember hearing that on the radio, probably station KDIA in Oakland. My first record was Hound Dog and I know that was a 45. Does that song predate the 45 era or was it available in both 78 and 45?

Ha Ha, so did we! Gallo White Port, it was terrible.

It is a 78 I bought it the first time I heard it on KWBR or KDIA I don't remember which. It was mail order from a record store in Berkley. Luther McDaniels (Lord Luther) lived here in Salinas the other three guys were at Fort Ord. They all worked at a car wash. It was probably 1955-56????? Today I stick to just lemon juice it seems to work a lot better.

OK guys back to the cars. Here's a couple shots of the Soto Bros. "Alky Wagon" It does kinda go along with the WPLJ theme doesn't it?

Thanks Gomes for the Great Film! Sure brings back a lot of memories ot that era. Man back then that old airport on King Road was way out in the country, with all the dairy farms and chicken ranches. Castie

I finally found this picture I took at the Salinas Drags in 1956. I am not sure now what car this is. It looks like the one in the video, and you are right it does look a lot like the Scorpion. I am not an expert on dragsters. All I ever did was paint a few.

  26. You're right, Rod, it does look a lot like Langley's Scorpion. The nose isn't quite the same, but cars were always evolving... I'm not sure if Langley came west to California, except for really major meets. Thanks for the photo. You sure have some good 'uns.
