I am sittin here reading the new Rodders Digest!!!! Picked it up today. The only thing I see missing so far is justSteve!? Just glancing at it I see Denise' mug and the Olds. SorchiK art, and lots of traditional hotrods! All I can say for now, gotta go read.
I bought mine on the newstand. Our Magazine vendor is usually a few days quicker than the rest of the country though
Dammit Tman, now I've gone and spent $25 that I could have hoarded for rusty parts....I was sitting here at work when I saw the post...Barnes and Noble just around the corner so off I went. There is was...peeking out from in between Duper Rod, Sweet Wodding, and Goldchainer Weekly......RODDERS DIGEST! My heart was pounding as I*******ed it before anyone could jump in front of me...there were only two left. My trembling hands opened the cover...thinking all the time there's no way it could be the same...wait...it looks the same...the same writers.....BY GOD It's like they just went away on a vacation and decided to come back.... YES! IT'S TRUE! IT'S BACK! Finally......Even FIFTEEN THINGS is there..... I gotta go, I got reading to do.....oh, the mag is not $25, I had to get Ol SKool RoDz to see what all the hype is about...and the new Rodders Journal was calling my name too.... Thanks Tman, I guess I will once again join the ranks of magazine subscribers again... After all, it's just the non-interactive version of the HAMB for the bathroom! Brian
Brian, I actually grabbed at my issue like a dog covets food! Even though the store was empty, I clutched my copy like it was the last one ever!
GAAAAACKKKKKKKK! Both of you*****! Don't make me get off this chair and drive into the damn city for a stoopid magazine..........assholes.....
Burger told me it wasn't going to be out until December 1 -- but I stopped into Shinders this evening so the kid could blow his allowance on more Magic cards . . . and I wander past the automotive rack, thinking "Ah, I've already seen all these at work already," and BAM. There it is. Gotta tell you, it was VERY weird picking an RD off the newsstand having never seen any of the content before! Even weirder to have to BUY the damn thing . . . but I'm glad I did. 15 Things, the OMRR (Obligatory Miss Ryan Reference), Sorchik, Red Shoes, and Burger . . . it was like old home week. Just like it'd never been gone . . . Unfortunately I didn't have any stories "in the can" when this one went together. But I'm working on some articles that'll show up soon. So go scour the newsstands, boys -- it's out there. And be sure you let Buckaroo know what you think . . . make sure it's back for good! Steve.
Brian...haven't gone looking. Thanks for the offer but I'll have my new copy read by Monday. I'm gonna hit Borders tomorrow and have a cup-a-coffee while I read..cool place.
Well, if you cna't find it just let me know...! I've got to bring this up...as I do everytime RD comes up....is there anyone who attended the one and only, first and last show that RD put on? It was the early '90's, in Moultrie, GA, held in conjunction with the ECTA meet...I think there were 34 of us there. That's one of the few dash plaques I've ever cared about displaying anywhere...I met some crazy guy from NC who had built his on fiberglass roadster body, and frame rail covers that looked like '32 rails, and had designed his own front suspension using a fiberglass monoleaf as the lower control arm...also was selling glass pedal car bodies. Anybody know the guy? Brian
HELL YESSSS!!!!!!!!! I cant*****in believe it`s back and I didnt know about it! I even have a buddy (a guy I do some trading with) that works for Buckaroo and he didnt tell me a damn thing about this....he knows I`m a fanatic! I going to e-mail him a good cussin right now! Just-Steve, how come you held out on us, man thats just not right! If the book store was open right now...I`d be gone! Now if I re-subscribe, I wont be getting any copies of American Rodder in the mail......will I? BTW, Is the Mopar******(sp) a HAMBer?
You guys better not be kidding! All my back issues are virtually worn out and I know every word and pic.I was gutted when it folded as I was when Hot Rod Mechanix went****s up.It sounds like it`s got the old ingredients that made it what it was,I can`t wait for the boat to get in.Now thats what I call GOOD news. It has`nt gone all glossy paper `n***** like American Rodder I hope.
Looks EXACTLY like the last one....same type...and everything. The only trouble I see is the name Jeff Tann as technical editor...isn't he the one that took R and C marching down the 1-800 billet trail after Ganahl brought it back from the dead? Brian
This mag is pretty cool, big olds, my buddys flattie bucket (my tire next to the bucket...whoopty doo ) and the 27 t-truck found by Gary Moore. I sold a car to that dude down at the Indy Goodguys.
Ya hear that Denise? Maybe some more build up articals on BIG OLDS is in order. I'm sure the addition of a top will make a great series of tech articals. But i know you are kind of shy about things like that
I saw it last night at Borders.....Im so bored with hot rod magazines right now I didnt even pick it up. I guess I will have to go back in hope of the gleaming light I need. I ended up reading Combat hand gun magazine and the Iron Horse
The top shelf is now expensive comic books . . . all THAT stuff is in a back room behind some swinging saloon doors. I just go there for the car mags . . . honest! Steve. PS -- I had time to read the "new" RD last night -- Basically it looks like it's "back from the dead and ready to party!"
I got mine when I had to go to the mall to pick up my wife. I was early so I went to yhe book store and BAM!!! There it was. Good shot of Denise and the Olds also of my friend's black Flathead bucket in the 'Zoo coverage. Awesome.
I picked up the new Rodder's digest and was dismayed to read the editorial at the front... The part about how he hates rat rods because they're usually unsafe and have rusty bodies, and put the hobby back ,etc. He also goes on to say how great the return of Billet Boyd to the scene is. Sounds like they are being influenced by the new owners love for high buck glamour rods( American Rodder) and the advertizer's dollar.
I wondered how long it'd be before Burger's editorial came up. It reads: "The concept of a 'rat rod' with no front brakes, poor welding, rotted bodies, and other such shabby and unsafe bits does nothing for me, but it does potentially threaten our sport. Come on guys, we cleaned up our act on safe cars 25 years ago." So what's to argue with there? He's right on. And I got the impression he brought up Boyd's return and upcoming TV show to show what's happened to hot rodding's visibility in the time that RD was hibernating. Burger's still a grass-roots hot rodder, but he likes all kinds of stuff -- traditional, high-tech, even sporty cars. (Little known fact -- in what little spare time he has, he road races a Porsche 944.) Give 'em more than one issue before you put him in the same corner that some of you shoved****us into! later, Steve.
All the Buckeroo magazines I've seen lean toward slick and I'm sure this one will share some of that. Since the dominant color of my daily driver is rust, I was a little put off that editorial too. But mine does have modern brakes and good tires on all four corners because I care a lot about some of the people who ride in it. I felt put down by that part of the editorial, though I certainly won't argue with trying to ensure it is as safe as I can make it.
[ QUOTE ] Ya hear that Denise? Maybe some more build up articals on BIG OLDS is in order. I'm sure the addition of a top will make a great series of tech articals. But i know you are kind of shy about things like that [/ QUOTE ] Yep, I've got my ears on. Went to a couple of places today looking for it, to no avail. I'll have to send my sister to the Little Professor in Dearborn tomorrow. They normally have a large selection of mags. Me? Shy? Right! The guys at RD know how to get ahold of me. If they think the readership would like to continue reading about the buildup of Big Olds, I would be honored to submit a few articles. The first being the top of course. You know I'll be taking tons of photos of its installation.
Read it twice already. And I can say the fears of Buckaroo screwing this one up are false. This is a well done magazine that should appeal to all of us. Just the ribbing the give NRSA/Lawnchairs/Geritolistic rodders is worth the cover price.
I know Burger is into trad dueces...with brakes and all kinds of other old school rods, I think he still has a 57 ford wagon that is pretty traditional. I dont think he has anything against a well built, well thought out trad hot rod, he just dosent want to see anyone get hurt and give the hobby a bad name! Hell, look at the underpinnings of Ryans car, if I`m not mistaken he`s running Wilwoods...am I wrong?
Ok people, before you go pulling comments out of Bergers editorial, read the whole damn thing, not just pick the parts out that you dont agree with . On the Boyd comment, heres the segment word for word Beep, Beep, Beep ..this just in .breaking news: its a Boyd report. Speaking of Boyd, did you see him on TV? Luckily things are always is a state of flux in the world of street rodding, and while RD has left and returned, so too has Boyd Coddington. Yes, Boyd is back, building great hot rods and big billet wheels. Recently, news filtered down to the print media that Boyd will be hosting his very own TV show beginning in January on the Discovery Channel. My, my, havent hot rods and motorcycles become mainstream? Not long ago, the Discovery Channel was relegated to documentaries about Spider webs. Of course were hoping they dont model Boyds show after some of the biker shows where theres more shouting, fighting, and slamming of doors than actual building. These shows are a blend of big-time wrestling and a fabrication shop making it impossible for me to watch for more than 3 minutes. Of course, I suppose if they did a TV show about what it takes to actually build a street rod, theyd loose 80 percent of the audience whose average IQ consistently hovers right around room temperature and might be subsequently lowered through the wonders of alcohol . On the rat rods . Some things that we wont be bringing you include scantily clad women and rat rods (and I have no idea why those two are sharing a sentence). W never did do the scantily clad women although we did have the ever lovely Ms. Ryan to teach us a lesson and as for the rat rod thing, heres my stand on that: First of all I hate the name. Second, Ive been around hot rods for some 40 years now, and I never met a person who intentionally built a poor example of a hot rod. Oh, some may have done it in spite of their intentions, but all the hot rodders Ive ever met set out to build the best car they could possibly build. The concept of a rat rod with no front brakes, poor welding, rotted bodies, and other such shabby and unsafe bits does nothing for me, but it does potentially threaten our sport. Come on guys, we cleaned up our act on safe cars 25 years ago. Now, on the other hand, youll notice the cover of this very issue is graced by a Duece roadster in blue suede. The flat paint is a fashion statement and works great on the car, However, this car is in no way a rat rod, nor is the Track-T on page six of this issue, It too has a satin finish, but both cars are built right, built safe and have tons of character and time tested traditional hot rod design. Beyond that, our cover car enjoyed a recent jaunt from Delaware to San Francisco try that is a rat rod. We applaud the traditional movement, the fun of a patina hot rod, and the joy of a well finished street rod; however, you wont see rat rods on these pages. For those lovers of rat rods who either cant or refuse to build a safe and sound street rod, send your*****hing emails to gburger@buckaroocommunications.com, as this opinion is that of the editor and no one else. There, I knew something important would show up on these pages. End of editorial..... So, if you a looking for a rat rod mag, pick up oL sKool rOdZ. That ought to satisfy you . For those who werent around for the fisrt fifteen years of Rodders Digest, is was one of the best produced, cover all aspects of the hobby mags that there ever was. And, it looks like there is going to be a lot of effort to keep it that way . Sermon over. Probably the longest post Ive ever done, but I just couldnt sit back and let this thread get turned into another rat rod post . Back to the regularly scheduled programming. Brian
