Well I guess it had to happen...I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday in Billings to buy the book G***er Wars. The usual deadbeats were there reading the books and magazines for no charge, spilling coffee and sleeping in those soft chairs. I went over to the magazine rack and my eyes popped when I saw The Rodder's Journal #24 starring back at me! There were about 8 copys so I sorted thru them to find one cherry one that was'nt torn or stained or worse and headed for checkout. It was then that I realized something different about TRJ. It had this big *** bar code right on the front cover! Damn! Now maybe because I live up here in "The Last Best Place" I did'nt know the TRJ has been selling all along in magazine stores. If so clue me in. Flashback to my youth in the early 50s at the local comic book place. The owner after noting that you were reading the comic rather than buying would say...This ain't no library! Buy that comic or get out! Man has the world changed!
TRJ has just recently been for sale at the better book stores like Barnes and Noble. I think it has only been available through them for the last few issues. Someone here maybe able to narrow it down a little better. Frank
I think your right. Booksamillion does'nt carry ir ......yet. When I lived in Denver I went to a place called "Car Books" in Littleton. The owner, whos name exscape me was an editor for Rod and Custom back in the day. His first name is Neil. That place rocked! He has just about every car mag ever put out.
They've had it at Barnes and Noble for a while. I've gotten the last 10 or so from there. Hastings has it too, they always try to charge me the Canadian price though.
Yep, Barns and Noble has had if for about three years or so. Trivia about the bar code....Everyone knows that TRJ prints two covers - one for subscriptions, and one for "other". Well, the "other" cover is on the stand at the bookstores, BUT for the first few I saw on the stand had barcode stickers applied to the "other" cover. Then, for about a year, the barcode was printed as part of the cover, and now they've gone back to stickers. SO, for you TRJ collector perverts, that means that there are actually THREE versions of some covers. The subscription cover, the "other" cover and the "other" cover with barcode. Anyone have an extra #3 available? Any cover?
[ QUOTE ] The "guy" was Neal East. You're right, he's a great guy, an icon. [/ QUOTE ] NO...that guy IS Neal East (not was)...still alive and kickin'...and his store has more hot rod mags and books than anywhere else!!!! R-
At one time Neal East edited a magazine called "Old Cars Illustrated". Too bad it didn't last, because it had a lot of great features on early sprint cars, midgets and the like. If you ever run across a copy at a swap meet, check it out. Neal also had the great good fortune to own the Doane Spencer roadster for a number of years.
