we've decided to move to the dallas area and i'm trying to get info on rodder/packrat freindly areas not too far out, since i dont want a long commute.
but far enough out that i can find a place with a barn/shop structure or room to build one and make noise (hammering, grinding, open headers).
where are the dragstrips, swapmeets, cool places to cruise on friday nights?

First of all Welcome! The D/FW area is huge so if you could specify where you'll be working it will help out quite a bit. I live in Mansfield with is just South West of Dallas and a bit South East of Ft. Worth. Most places you'll find aren't too bad about noise, even in the city. However, you'll most likely NOT live in Dallas itself. Rather, Plano, McKinney, etc. If you're not site specific to Dallas itself but you ARE into 1/4 mile drags I'd suggest you google drag strip and Dallas or Ft. Worth. There's quite a few around here. Personally I'm a road course guy so the further South and West that I live the better as there's a road course in Cresson Tx. Again, welcome and I hope you look forward to a 180 degree turn around on the amount of rain you'll be seeing. :D

right now my wife and i are gathering as much info as we can,i dont have a job waiting for me,im a mechanic so i figure i'll have to drive into the city to get work at a dealership.my cousin lives in sanger and it looks like i could get a decent size place but i just dont want to be stuck with neighbors that are not understanding or tolerant of my hobby.
yes we are looking forward to a lot less rain and hot weather.

There are car dealerships all over the DFW area. There actually aren't many "in the city". They are all over the place so you can preety much pick where you want to live. Dallas starts in downtown and just sort of flows outward. There isn't really a dividing line between the city itself and all the surrounding cities. When you throw Fort Worth into the mix then you really start having a large area that you have to cover if your looking for a house.

Well, Dallas the city has one of the highest crime rates in the country right now. The cops aren't paid for crap so they don't care. Hard to say. All depends on where you would get a job. The whole area is growing so fast that the space you crave may be gone before long and then you'll get some pesky subdivision who whines about your old cars. Lots of rural areas to live, just depends on how far you are willing to drive.

Yeah, don't "settle" on Dallas. Matter of fact you'll probably be better off NOT living in Dallas itself. There are dealerships littered around the Metro-plex. Here's some food for thought. Between Benbrook, Tx (Extreme West Ft. Worth.) and Mesquite, Tx (Extreme East Dallas) is 56 miles!! Now, that's the extremes from East to West. Check out this link for an over view and map of the area. As far as places NOT to live.... well that can get kind of sticky because some of the places are decent with bad "pockets". For example, I wouldn't want to live in some parts of Duncanville or Irving or Arlington or Dallas or Ft. Worth. Then again other areas of those same cities are great. This is a bit biased but frankly Mansfield does the trick for me. You could get 10 acres, or less, out here for not too much cash and know that it's still cool to grind at night. Hell, I do and I live in a sub-division. Granted the garage is closed and I know and help all my neighbors but still.

Amen - I got out too! But, I moved to North Louisiana - good people, good food, no traffic, and a couple of crackheaded hurricane evacuees.

i should have said "...and surrounding area" i guess. ive been looking all around the dfw area , how is crowley or azle or caddo mills?
ive seen some places that look great on the realestate website but its hard to tell what its really like. also been looking at the local (dfw)newspapers on line just totry to get a feel for different places.

Crowley is nice. Still pretty virgin too. However, still close enough to DFW to be accessible.

I work in resedential real estate in DFw. There are so many things to consider. What size house you want. How much land. Schools. Taxes. Value. Location. Homeowners association. What you get in Highland Park for 1 mill, is way different that what you get in Mansfield for the same money. There is so much area diversity in the metroplex that you can find anything that you are looking for within a 35 mile radius of DFW airport.

I sent you a Pm earlier and would be glad to help.

I don't go to dallas/ft worth often anymore, but the comment that dallas isn't hot, and has little rain might be a little off. Seems like there is always a thunderstorm dumping rain, and kids and cars going down the sewer canals faster than cars on the freeway. I hear that's why the water tastes funny, because of all the people in the sewage lagoons after a storm passes through. Hot? Let me tell you about hot, and just enough humidity to make it miserable. It ain't no Biloxi, but people from seattle kind of huddle under bridges like they are in fish out of water shock :) Traffic? Oh my God, 24 hours a day, and only half of them have a license or motor skills to operate them without smashing into you. Everyones car in dallas/ft worth looks like the cars I used to see at the demolition derby's back in Oregon.

North or west of Fort Worth would be my suggestion. Lots of oppurtunities, less traffic, less crime. Azle is a pretty good place, but I would try to be a little closer to Fort Worth. I think you will love it.

I lived in Mckinney Irving The Colony Nacogdoches

Mckinney is a really nice place check it out. Irving is cool but has its ghettos
the colony would be my pick of the car freindly places its far enough into the sticks that you mght not run into as much CCR's and stuff like that. but it is still close to DFW area to make a commute.
As for nacogdoches first off can you pronounce it? ya its tuff but it is in the middle of nowhere they dont care about anything out there. they do have stephen f austin university which is probably the savior of that town. somthing like 25000 pop during school then 10000 when they are all at home on break.

Nacadoches? Geez, that's 3 hours east of Dallas. I wouldn't consider that even close to the same geographical area. If you are a car guy, stay away from HOA's.

That sounds like a GREAT idea!...I'd like to volunteer to be the zoning enforcement officer.

    Not running?..no problem
    Not titled or licensed?..no problem
You must have one hot rod under construction at all times.

Instead of a Public Library, we'd have a Public garage supported by the HAMBers in HAMB county.

North Dallas does have some nice new cities and neighborhoods that are coming up. A little more pricey than west ft worth or even south dallas. Midlothian and Waxahachie are only about 30 minutes out of Dallas and still quite rural, alot of 3/4 and 1 acre properties which gives you decent space to the neighbors. Plus the taxes here are lower that Mansfield which is right next door.

D31-- is the house next door to you still for sale? Tell them to cut the price to about half, and I'll move in! I promise not to complain... might even let you borrow some tools! :D
