Hello all I have a glass 34 ford, glass car, and had to pull the rear window glass out because of water leaks. I would like to change this up to a roll down window. Could anyone direct me to sources for the parts to do this? Anyone that has done this, could you post up pics, and list the parts you used in your build. Power or non power would be fine. I have nothing in the way of parts right now, so hoping those that have done this can point me in the right direction. It would be nice to get some air flow in the car. Thanks
I thought about this on my 41 PU but decided to scrap it. Here is a good thread Technical - Roll down rear window | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
And you're bothered about leaks!! A roll down window is just a big leak, requiring its own water capture and drainage system. Not sure about 34s but to 32 the framework was wooden with a metal gutter/drain but was all steel by 36. Chris
Maybe not LEAK, but it will surely dribble. Every window seal I have ever seen on an old Ford has leaked in some fashion if it hasn't been glued up with black urethane. You would need a full lip seal to keep all the water from running down there, and even then the ends will probably not be water tight. But that's OK, because Henry designed a huge trough to fit under there ad drain it through the floor.
Thanks to all . Seem like water leaks will be a problem no matter what I do. I was looking at the car and figured if I was to do this, I would need a large tray to catch the water because of how a 33/34 rear window slants. Im thinking for the work involved here, maybe this wouldnt be such a good idea. As much as Id like this window to roll down, the water leaks I had were just a few drips landing on the floor. Having the glass reinstalled would probably seal it up leak free for atleast a while. Being my car is glass, its not like rust would be a issue. Wet carpets would piss me off though. I will need to ponder on this before I decide to make it roll down, or just put it back the way it was. Thanks for all the input guys
Don't be too deterred! If you can catch the water it can be drained off. Picture this. Large sheetmetal panel, say 18 gauge, wider than the window and going deep behind the seat, like that pictured, only in steel. Formed into u sections at the sides that also extend up the sides of the window apperture. Theses take the window channel that the glass slides in. Drain collection pan formed at the bottom. A handy sheetie could do this all in one piece, but welded or riveted joins would work. A separate metal sheet or strips then fastened accross to provide mountings for window mechanism. Appropriate tabs to mount to bodywork. Drain outlet from pan to hose through hole in floor. Chris
The window box needs to be only as deep(thick) as the window mechanism, wide as the window, & only as long the window will roll down. Can be slanted to match the windows' current angle. Just put in a decent sized proper drain & use a good caulk to seal any joints. Box could be done in metal, wood, or glass(maybe avail from some 33/34 glass-coupe mfgr, or from some wood-kit guy, idk ?). Any small rear-side-window mechanism from a later-model, or even a window mech from almost any early(ier) car/truck could be adapted. What the heck, maybe cutup an old junk early pu door & use everything from that to make the box/window assembly? Too bad you're so far away; friend had one from a 40's Stude pu for ~$10. Seals should be avail at restorers' parts places. Or look to late model suv-type rear-hatch window seals. Water-intrusion/leakage no different than reg door windows. A decent restorers-type illustrated catalog would show you what you need. Don't forget the window channel/felts. Cotton-pickin' restorers - they are good for something... . Yup, the breeze is nice, esp iffen you have the tilt-out w/s. . Marcus...
My 32 three window had a glued in back glass when I bought it and I decided that I wanted to make it a roll down back window so I ordered the trough and roll up mechanism to do it and installed it. After that, every time I washed the car I had leaks and the water in the trough sloshed around making noise. I finally gave up and pulled it out and had a glass guy glue the rear window in solid and it dry inside now.
