If you're looking for a good military green order the semi gloss olive drab aerosol from Beechmont Canvass. Has a real nice low sheen to it and sprays great, very forgiving. Used it on the Jeep in my album pics.
It just so happens I have one of those 'gizzmos'.... though mine is a Genuine Electrolux not some knock off. Not that I'd try and use it to actually paint something though maybe the "30 grit" finish would work fine in fender wells. If you shot some Omni Black it would give you that faux tar and kerosene look without the hassle and clean up, plus you wouldn't have to be concerned about having all the protection real tar and kerosene would give.
I've seen the work you have to put into a "roll on" paint job to make it look halfway decent. It's 10 times the amount if you were to spray. I painted my 48 with a 25 gallon portable compressor in a carport type building with Low Gloss farm implement paint from Tractor Supply. Materials run me $38 for a gallon of paint, $14 for a pint of hardener and 12 bucks for a gallon of reducer (mineral spirits). I used a water ball on the end of my gun to stop the moisture and sprayed away. Three coats later I had this... A LOT less effort than rolling and sanding and rolling and sanding and on and on. And the satin effect is spot on.
So true!!! Being in my sixties I've seen many a rod in my youth with an "alternative" paint job. True, an HVLP gun can be had cheap to spray with, but the compressor and all it's necessities costs a bunch just to paint with when you don't use air tools, too. At my age I'm back to rod building like I was a teen again.......teeny budget!
I am going to roller my caddy. Actually already did one coat in the trunk area to see how it goes on. Going back into that area to finish up the body work, but it will look as good as whatever is under it allows. The big moparts thread is the reference I recommend. I have more time than money so it is probably the best option for me right now.
I was told this by a guy who paints for a living..so dont shoot the messenger his words were.."the paint doesnt know or care how it is applied, paint isnt that smart. The out come of a good paint job is not in the application of the paint as so much as the prep work to the body before the paint goes on" Do a great job on the prep, than roll that bitch and show it to us
