I'm on the fence about what kind of rollbar to put in the DeSorta, if any. I've seen some singe hoops only behind the driver that I like, and some that go all the way across. I have also seen a bunch that make the car look like a dune buggy. I can't decide. Show me some pics of modifieds with rollbars. Inspire me...
I thought about running one in mine too but can't decide either. The thing would stick up higher than the windsheild to work right but would it look good. Another thing would be if you put one in and it wasn't certified to the specs of NHRA or IHRA. It then could prevent you from making a p*** at your local track. The decisions........
I like the driver side only rollbars....looks "serious"... And by the way, very nice looking car there! Proportions, eng. set back, body/rear wheel spacing, nice "sit"...not too high, not too low. Good job!
Yeah. One of my pics of your car is one of my inspirations. The deuce in the background is your too, right?
I couldn't find any decent pics but this big half round hoop was real popular on dirt track modified roadsters and on early drag cars, also lakes cars. I've seen a shot of one on the Niekamp at Bonneville. As far as early euro racers - usually they used the drivers head.
I struggle with this question for my roadster, too. The Spalding bros car -- arguably the best looking real track roadster ever built -- uses the big round hoop, and it looks great on that car. But centered on the car, and relatively low, it would obviously provide very little real protection for a 2-seat car with the driver sticking out. Then, too, with a windshield in the front and a roll bar behind the seat, it can look like you're driving around in a bedstead. So far, I haven't thought of a solution that I actually want to put in my car.
Yeah that's Holy Heck in the background. I'm not hung up on roll bars or anything, but both cars, for their own reasons, cried out for a roll bar. I actually have built more cars without roll bars than with!
my modified will have a pair of roll hoops that go through the petrol tank. Here's a picture - I didn't like these and cut them off to be replace with Cobra style hoops.
Kirk, I hunted for pics of old track roadsters but couldn't find many. It looks like very few racecars had rollbars prior to WW II. None of the sportscars in these pics are HAMB-ish, but maybe the rollbars will provide some ideas. -Gary
If you giver a damn about safety, built a hoop with two kicklers to the back rails. Most of the better ' California Track" modifieds I've seen pics of were done that way. Jan
Hey Kirk... these are not on a modified... but I have always liked the look of the rollbars in the BMW Z3s. If you were to look at them from the top down you would see that they mount on the same curve as the interior opening... Can't be that bad... the site is MyRoadster dot com.. haha. http://www.myroadster.net/rollbars_z3.asp
I think the AC Cobra style would suit it best, they are not overwhelming like some are on a small car.
So, you gotta problem with dune buggies?! ;/ Rex Schimmer, your project looks really cool, did I miss a thread on this one?
I know it's way, way the wrong era, but the look of the roll hoops in the Audi TT and BMW Z3 would sure work for me in a modified. EDIT: Looks like SanDiegoJoe beat me to it. I should have read through the whole thread first, instead us just skimming it.
Kirk!...Yes it is my modified...and it was at GG's Waukesha...and thanks for the complement...do you have any pic's of the interior and the TH 350 heater? Are you going to be at Madison GG's this year?
