This thread has helped me no end. Thank you to all that have contributed. I have a question to add if I could. I'm looking at building a Rolling Bones style front end and I noticed how most people have cut into the lower rails the clear the spring. As I'm in Australia and engineering guidlelines don't allow this, is there a way to get around it? I noticed laidout53 you don't have yours cut. Did your setup work without cutting the frame rails? I'm running a 48 front axle so like yours the spring perch bosses are wider. [/QUOTE]
In looking at the pictures I see a couple of problems, the first is that the angle of the shackles is wrong and won't properly work that way. The next is just that, the spring is going to hit the frame the way it is without the notches.
Shackle angles are fixed now, and the bottom of the frame is cut off just didn't cut up the side of the frame yet. Waiting tell its all mocked up to see if its needed. Ill get a new better picture from alower angle showing shackle angles and frame tomorrow.
Stock crossmember with a reversed eye stock spring. I will notch the sides of the frame rails once there is some weight on the suspension. Going to use the stock spring which is fairly wide and instead of using a spring perch through the wishbone ill box in a tube boss that size under the wishbone. I have a pic if i can get it to load, not mine, but same idea! Using as many low buck factory parts as possible then building the rest from scratch.
Here's where I'm at pie cut the wishbone to have it end up in the middle if the frame. "Insert Epic Quote Here"
Is that a steering dampener? More photos would be helpful thank you. Is the spring sitting on the rails at the moment?
Not mine. Just a pic saved on my computer, one appears to be the steering dampener. "Insert Epic Quote Here"
Thank you. You wouldn't have a pic from directly in front? I want to see how the spring sits on the frame
Sorry this is the only pic i saved. Like the Steel boss under the wishbone instead of the spring perch through the bone. I did find it from google images somehow under suicide front end or spring behind. Could not replicate my results today, likely due to mexican food overload and beer.
Sorry, and thanks. I've only had time to mess with it when the kids go to sleep. A little Black Keys and a beer can be motivating. I'll stop thread stomping now. "Insert Epic Quote Here"
here's the pictures I promised. First is the new shackle angles Next are showing the cut off the bottom of the frame rails flush with the cross member. Hope this helps Justin
Thank you. Are you still waiting to see how much you need to cut out from the side of the rails once everything is in place? Have you pinched the frame so the rails are flush with the grill?
Can you get around it by heating and beating the rail instead of cutting and welding? Maybe just bending the bottom flange up in that area will give you enough clearance? If you are really strong and persistent you could probably beat the side into an inverted U shape as well.
I really like this idea. I'll set it up and like everyone else see where and how much I need to trim, cut, manipulate. I'll definitely consider your tip though alchemy
Another thought. You can reinforce the side of the frame with plate cut to fit inside the frame rail with a finger over the cross member. A 3/8" finger 1/2" tall would more than make up for any strength lost buy relieving the frame. Picture shows how Bobby Walden and Jake Jacobs do it.
Nice. Is that a vega box with the pitman facing up? I've got a 56 F100 box that might not work with my similar front end setup!! Thanks Chris. "Insert Epic Quote Here"
This is the type of setup I want to run in my 34 with stock 37 parts. I'm running a W348 motor and no hood so the extra room will be good but I want to run tube shocks instead of the old style. His threads definitely been an eye opener that's for sure Ironically it's our hunt to be individuals that make us all the same.
I'm probably not the first one to say this, but I don't care for the Rolling Bones name ***igned to this style front suspension. They use the design or idea if you will but they did not design or invent it.
