I just bought a Ronco/Vertex magneto (28088)for a bog or small block. Chevy.

    1. Who should I send it to to have it serviced/repaired (someone suggested Pat Mason of Mason Racing Ignitions-MRI).

    2. What does the number 28088 on the tag mean?

    3. what does the cap color mean (i've seen them in black, blue, and red).

    4. At the base of the magneto is a br*** threaded cap, is this a tack drive?

Any and all help would be appreciated, thank you.

The number is probably a serial number.... doubt it means anything. The cap color doesn't matter, but for aesthetics you might consider using the color that you like (but I believe the caps are only available in black today). I suspect the br*** cap is for a grease fitting, but post a picture and you'll get a better reply on that from someone else.

I am a Mason fan in PA. He has done my two mags in my '32 and one for my F100 289. Did you see the story in The Rodder's Journal on Vertex magnetos? It was a couple issues ago. I describe the years the cap colors were available, as well as ID and date the differing Ronco/Vertex tags.

The br*** threaded cap is a grease cup. You unscrew it and fill it with grease. Based on usage, you turn the screw to regrease the shaft occasionally (every couple months) until it is ultimately all the way in. You then take it off, fill it with grease and start over again.
