I go to a LOT of hot rod events around the country and this is one of the best. Much thanks to the Kontinentals and everyone else involved in making this a great weekend. Thanks to Reggie for organizing the Friday shop tour; cool cars, great friends and good food. 2800 miles round trip in a roadster with no more problems than a few loose nuts & bolts. I got a bunch of pictures. They'll be on my site in a day or so.
Damn, I really wanted to talk to you Denver guys about whats happening in the old home town. I was running around a bit too much. I guess I just need to make a trip up. Thanks for coming y'all
Wow, what a great time again! From the humble beginnings four years ago to this, who could believe it? Makes my 3500 miles round trip to do it again. Great to see all my old TX friends and other HAMB'ers. See some of you in Paso in a couple months. The trip driving this year was not exactly the best for me. Replaced the alternator and battery about 45 minutes out of home, quick $100 there. Was supposed to make it down to socal and stay at OGNC's place to head out with hime and DRD57 Wed morning. Then about 4 hours from home at 9:00 pm I lost the carrier bearing and the p***enger rear tire lost the tread on the 60 El Camino. So dead car and no socal that night. Stayed the night in Bakersfield, OGNC got me in touch with a friend with a paint shop (K-Daddy Kustoms). Had the car towed to the shop, borrowed a floor jack and jackstands and K-Daddy helped me chase the new parts. $80 for the tow and $120 in parts and tire. Finally hit the road in Bakersfield about 1:00 pm and made it to Tucson at midnight where I dropped off some parts at Metalshape's place. He was nice to let me crash at his place. Had to adjust my ****** linkage at Metalshape's place before I left, no cost except time. Hauling along the freeway and get pulled over by TX trooper for doing 80 or a little more in a 75 zone. I'm thinking WTF, and then he gives me a warning, no ticket. Drove into Austin and got pulled over again on 290 for doing 68 in a 60. Again get off with a warning only, maybe my bad luck with the car is affecting my trooper karma? Finally arrived in front of the Continental Club about 11:30 Thurs evening. Fri morning went to an exhaust shop and had the old leaking mufflers and baning tailpipes taken care of, cut the mufflers out and replaced with straight pipes, now it sounds better. Some new tailpipe hangers and no more banging against the frame. Things are looking better and the long trip is becoming more accetable. Swapped all my stuff I brought and picked up that Austin body that was upside down in the El Camino. Left town real early Sun morning with OGNC as his car had no headlights and we needed to utilize daylight. Going along good except for the 10 mpg parachute in back of my car, until my other rear tire developed a broken belt about 2 hours out of El Paso. Swapped the spare tire on and then found a Pep Boys in El Paso that was still open at 5:30. Quick tire replacement and another $60, back on the road. By this time my bump stops have disintegrated and I am hitting the driveshaft on the car at any size bump in the road. Not a good thing and worried about my new carrier bearing being destroyed. After spending the night I call Metalshapes and beg plead and ask if I can drop the body at his place. He was nice and let me drop it off. I could not have made it home and this saved me, many thanks for the help to Metalshapes. Rest of the way home was pretty much uneventful. What a long trip with the unplanned breakdowns and parts and tires. It was a great time while in Austin, just a lot of troouble getting there and back. I have been to every Round-Up so far and intend to make the next one. Lesson to be learned, take a car that you have had time to sort out, not one that you just swapped an engine three days before, purchased 8 weeks prior, and have not had much experience with. Most important also do not overload it, this makes everything worse. The aggravation is the best way to make a great time go bad. Good thing the good times are still better then the aggravation.
Shaun I know where there about 800 of them. Come by the club. Don, happy you made it back home safe and sound. That roadster is the sh*t up close and in person. One of my favorites.
LOL the elco was parked next to my 60 bel air all day at the show and then I heard that you were driving it all the way back to California like that and was amazed at the thought ... glad you made it home without to much trouble
I hate the pep boys in El paso... a few vegas's ago I had to camp out in the parking lot just for them to be ****s when they opened.
Hey Krupa, It was good to "hang" with you and shoot the ****... Most relaxed part of the weekend. All I remember is driving, and then driving some more. Can't wait to get that ***** home and back in the shop so I can quit thinking about it for a few days. Turns out the Pep Boys in Irving or Los Calinas or wherever the hell I'm at ****s pickled *** as well. And O'Reillys down here? forget about it!
Are they down stairs? No one seemed to know on Saturday. Course I couldn't have picked a worse time to pick em' up.
