Nope, not that time of year. My wife and I did it in late June on our way back from the LARS in the roadster (NO A/C). It did get up to 115 when we went through Needles on our way to Oatman but we still had a lot of fun and just drank more water. I'll take the heat any day!
Like some of the guys have mentioned already, when crossing the desert be sure to bring more water then you think you'll need. Then pack another few gallons. 115 degrees plus will **** the moisture out of you pretty quick. On some stretches of the 66 in AZ it'll can be awhile before anybody comes along, and on Reservation portions of the road smoke signals will work way better then your cell phone. Lots to see here in my home-state, Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, Meteor Crater, The Grand Canyon, Kingman, The Oatman drive is fun and twisty and dangerous.... The cool thing is a two hour detour from nothern AZ will allow side trips to Sedona, or four corners, Havasupai Falls, The Sky Walk, Vegas is 90 mins. or so from Kingman/Hoover Dam, and Viva is going down in April.... You might also try searching around the http://www.arizonahighways.com/ website. And don't forget many extra batteries for your camera. Just like H20 in the desert, you'll always wish you had some more....
When you're coming down 66 in Illinois, make sure you stop at the Ariston cafe in Litchfield. I live in NM and still think the enchiladas there are better then ANY I've had out here.
well you live in the ****py part of the state, might as well be Texas and you know what they say about Texas........
i was just out in vegas in oct and went for a roadtrip to route 66 in kingman arizona. there is a route 66 muesum in kingman in the old powerhouse has a neat little movie and some neat stuff . also you can go over to the grand canyon is far you can cut thru the joshua forest is that interests you i thought it was a neat drive also you arent far from the hoover dam that was cool and right over the dam is supposed to be some kind of auto muesum owned by danny thomas or saint jude hospital. i didn't make it there so i couldn't tell you
I love the search feature of the Hamb. I'm planning a road trip in June/July as my new job gives me 6 weeks off in the summer and have some of my wifes family in Chicago and California. Thanks 60 Coupe for the gov link. Thanks, Alex
You will have a great time. Most of AZ has been covered by other guys. In Sliegman be sure to stop at the Snow Cap Drive-In. Those guys have quite an act. Ask for a small cone. Hackberry is a must for any car guy. The rat has some flathead speed parts right in the front of the store. Don't ask, their not for sale. That drive from Kingman to Oatman is an adventure for sure. It is twisty and has some drop-offs you might want to watch carefully. It also has some of the most beautiful desert views you will ever see, A tip for you: coming from the east stop at one of the little stores in Golden Shores and fill up. Everybody knows where Needles is and fools themselves by thinking gas is going to be cheaper. CA. gas has a lot of gold in it. About a dollar a gallon more. They don't wear a mask or hold a gun on you when you pay for gas in CA.....but they should. I don't have to tell you to have fun, RT66 is a great trip.
