the best place we stayed. still operated by the family that built it. the wigwam, right on old rt.66, holbrook,AZ.
I posted this on a previous 66 thread. I know some of these sites have already been mentioned. See also: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...e+66&showall=1 You should check out the Blue Whale if you're going through the Tulsa area. It's in Catoosa, the northeast side of the city. Arcadia, OK has the Round Barn and Pops(gas station with 10,000 kinds of soda). Clinton, OK and Elk City, OK have Route 66 museums. There are a ton of antique shops along the way. Rest Haven Court in Springfield, MO is a good place to get some rest. I have stayed there several times. Reasonable rates, vintage rooms. Reverend Jake
Somebody in Tulsa throw in some sights in downtown Tulsa area, I've herd there are some neat things to see but not sure where or what.
Was over there this year and travelled on the mother road from Amarillo TX thru to Hoover Dam. All of the above that have been mentioned are great but also make apoint of stopping at the store at Hackberry. Neat place.
iLL DEFINITELY SECOND THIS ONE. THEY HAVE A BUCH OF OLD CARS IN FRONT OF THE ROOMS...IT FEELS LIKE A TIME WARP, AND THE ROOMS ARE CLEAN AND WELL MAINTAINED. PLAN TO STAY THERE AND MAYBE CHECK OUT THE GRAND CANYON THE NEXT MORNING.
Yes it's not on Route 66 but the Bombing Memorial in OKC is very moving... If you work it out to stay in OKC overnight I suggest the Memorial at about 2am, very quiet, somber and you'd be surprised at how many people are there at that time... very well lit, sit under the Survivor tree and just take it all in...
Need to go to the Blue Dome District Downtown. Bluedome Diner, lots of stuff to do afterdark. They are in the process of restoring and reinstalling the Meadow Gold Sign at 11th and Peoria... Lots of neat motels along 11th Street (Route 66). The Cyrus Avery Memorial Bridge is cool...
