We're thinking about taking a trip on RT 66 this spring or summer and wondering about any problems we might run into on the way.It will probably be a few of us in roadsters or coupes so whats the best time of year to travel it.(weatherwise) Also is there any areas that could be "dangerous"? How are most of the police as far as" No fenders,no hoods, blue dots, loud pipes, and no inspection stamp?( In RI ya don't need one with antique plates). Are motels reasonable along the way?
Anything would help us.And lastly is most of the road good?(potholes, gravel etc?)
    Thanks

    That's a lot of questions!
There are substantial sections of the original Route 66 that are long gone (missing)...
    Weatherwise, I'd suggest September/October.
Lots of very reasonable motels along the way.
Potholes? Sure. No roads are immune to those, but it's certainly what I'd consider a decent, drivable road.

The main problem you will have will be too much fun.Stick to the old road as much as possible and there is still a lot of it.Plenty of info on the web through the Route 66 ***ociations in each state with maps etc.

Some of the old towns on the route have deteriorated but many others have reinvented themselves.Don't miss Harley and his wife in Erick Oklahoma for a great show.

Whatever time you think it will take then double it as there are so many spots to see.We spent 2 weeks going from Chicago to our turn off for Las Vegas and really wasn't enough.
Happy to give you more info if you need it.PM me.

There is another thread going some of the Hamber's are getting a Route 66 trip together in the April time frame. Propwash is prepping his Edsel for the trip....I really wanted to go...but to many other trips have got in there way..and with the price of gas going North ....those other trips may be limited.

You'll probably want to avoid the rt95 stretch through Providence...some bad characters through there...

  7. Jim:
A good friend of mine from Auburn Maine did Route 66 and then some from May 1st to the middle of June last year in his 33 Ford coupe. Did a total of 9600 miles in 6 weeks! Send me a PM and I'll send you his phone number; I'm sure he'll be glad to offer up any info. Let me run it by him tomorrow but it shouldn't be a problem.

Never had any probs in Ks, Ok, or Mo with the fuzz except when they pull in behind you at the gas station to check out your rides.

  9. We have a gaggle headed to "Viva Las Vegas" on April 1.
Toptinman will be once again showing us all the "must see" sites along the MotherRoad.
We will be doing as much 66 as possible, no fast food and staying at old "Motor Courts".
    All old school.
Unfortunatly the Edsel is not going to make the trip, but our '62 Thunderbird is.
Y'all are welcome to hook up with us in the Texas Panhandle.
This will be an epic trip.

Drove a bunch of it from Amarillo through N.M. and there are lots of other side roads there that are just as awesome. Rt. 60 is good for that.

  13. Well worth doing still,as some mention parts are closed.
I did this trip about 7 years ago and we had a great time....
little mom an pop places cool stuff to see in abandoned buildings and bussinesses, even old cars.
you have to get off and onto interstate to access some parts so dont miss any of the old road.
I did notice some of the old motels had permanent residents LIVING in them so watch out for that.
my wife still says we need to re run:cool: that Rt 66 drive!

In 2010, we drove most of the existing route from Oklahoma City to Kingman, AZ, on the way to Bonneville. Granted, it was in my old '95 Ford F350 CC 4x4, but it was a bunch of fun, regardless! I've driven about 90% of the existing road over the years. It really is a great deal of fun! We did not have a lot of time to stop to see a lot, but we did take in several of the small Oklahoma towns out West, the Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo, the gravel stretch near Tu***cari, and all of the Arizona portions. The road from Seligman to Kingman is absolutely great!

Once the Hudson is ready, I want to drive to Chicago and then drive the entire existing road to Santa Monica in one trip. Looking forward to doing that in the next two years.

Why not schedule your trip for early June and come out to the L>A> Roadster show.
Last year we had 5 of us go out from Oklahoma.
    Was a blast.

Most states will have somethihng similar to the guide in this link. From about mid-June through the end of September temperatures can reach 100 in central and western Oklahoma but it is rare that you can't find shade or a place to stop and cool off while enjoying local hospitality. Welcome to th esooner state when you come through OKC.
