Just finished converting aa A roadster from trunk lid to rumble seat. All trunk lids have both sets of mounting holes so factory hinges just bolt on. Tey are available through Brookville roadster as well as all they parts needed to do this swap. The trunk pans are different from rumble seat to trunk cars. The rear floor panel needs to be replaced or modified for clearance. If you dont have the factory hinge mounts on your body just make them out of 3/16 x3 flat stock. If you can access the trunk through the p***enger compartment I like to bolt up the new hinges, install the trunk lid in the hole.Align the lid gaps with shims and tack weld the lid in place. Then get inside the trunk from the p***enger compartment and install your hinge mounts and pivot points. weld everything up solid. cut tack welds and the lid should stay perfectley aligned. You will quickley find out that that trying to align lid any other way is very time consuming and a serious pita. Hope this helps.

If you've never had a rumble seat, you might be disappointed. I was so pleased when I bought the sport coupe with a rumble seat. OK I've had mine and I want a trunk again.

If you have young kids or grand kids they're cool for short trips but the rest of the time it's a PITA. Ya want to get a soda or beer out of the cooler?...you have to crawl on your belly like a reptile, to reach the cooler.

They are cool for guys to cruise the fairgrounds at the show but the rest of the time....I'll take a trunk.:D

Plus they are a pita to crawl in and out of. If you have good paint on the rear fenders it won't last. We stick our kids in the back so it is good in that there is room for a couple more but I prefer a trunk. We have a Model A sedan to haul the whole gang.

  6. My 32 has a rumble and it's the biggest pain in the *** thing I've ever had in any car I've ever owned.

A lot of folks - me included - envision cruising the fairgrounds or the Saturday night rod run with kids, grandkids or even another couple.
For most of us, it doesn't happen.

Then there's the little bit where things slide to the rear and if your trunk is full of luggage, hot rod seats and the like, at times the rumble lid won't open more than an inch.

    Access to things is difficult.
I'm forever walking back and forth to get things out because you have to do it from the side.
That's with a highboy car, with fenders it would be worse.

I swapped the in-trunk fuel cell for a tank a while back.
Unbolted the rumble lid and took it off.
Scratched the paint a bit, but it was worth it just for the convenience factor.

My 31 on 32 rails roadster project has a trunk lid and it's an absolute delight compared to the *%@&& rumble lid on the 32 roadster.

At least with the A it looks like going back won't be too difficult, the Wescott bodied 32 is another story.
At least it is if you use 32 style hinges.

In a word, be absolutely sure you want a rumble before you spring for one.

    Ok . . . 12 words, but you get the drift....:D

I was thinking about it too, but with child safety seat laws and the such who knows. If ya had an original seat around for a 30 coupe I would buy it though just to have it around as mine was originally equipped.

I think one of the main reasons I am into cars is because my dad used to drive around and I rode in the rumble seat.. When your a kid, there is nothing else like it. sometimes the pain in the *** is worth it.....Don

Yea I just hope I fit in mine when im done! i've allready ditched the package tray and the seat riser to get more room upfront so who knows about the rumble seat. But it looks like so much fun back there.. I was also contemplating the roll down back window...

Who's gonna drive it for you when you are back there?:D

I thought I'd get a lot of flack about raining on your parade.

My buddy had a blast in mine. I've used it to haul people about 4 or 5 times in 10 years.
