While reading through a compilation of Rumble Seat's (RIP) historical posts, I was curious if changing out the grease is still recommended? The article indicated that the grease used in offshore throw-out bearings is suspect and frequently lasts only 15-20,000 miles. Since my T-5 to flathead kit from Speedway probably included an offshore throw-out bearing, I was wondering if I should do this or if someone could recommend a source for a high quality piece? I'd rather not have to pull this thing apart after just 15,000 miles!

"I wash the new or used bearing in solvent until I’m certain all of the cheap grease used by the manufacturer is gone. Dry it without spinning it (low heat or compressed air). Drill a single 1/8" hole on the outer edge of the bearing (not in the engagement surface nor in the outer bearing
race). This is pretty hard and a good bit is needed. Then I use a needle type U-joint grease zerk adapter and give it TWO shots of high temp grease. Rotate the bearing half way around and give it TWO more shots of grease."

I did this to my 8BA many miles ago but totally forgot about it when installing my rebuilt 59b. [emoji15].
Looks like I’ll be dis***embling but not until I see a problem. Too much work. Maybe it’ll outlast me. God bless Rumbleseat. First cl*** guy.

I did that to a NOS ford throw-out bearing. Grease was hard and it would not spin. I drilled a hole just big enough to get the needle in there and washed all the old grease out with brake cleaner then pumped some disk brake wheel bearing grease in there. Closed up the hole with JB weld.
