I'm running the same tires as Cody just described, cops don't seem to care even when it's raining. I think that there is so few of them out there that it's kind of a non-issue but I'll bet if you get caught slidding corners or having any other fun oustide the law they would give them a little more concideration.

Where I am, the local PD might pull you over or follow you until you stop, to check out the car, see what engine you are running, and in my case, to get my business card, and ask what I am working on right now.

On the other hand, the California Highway Patrol, especially the young new ones, will pull you over for any an everything they can think of, if they feel like it.

I have sat in the OT/DD 4x4 by the side of the road for 45 minutes while a CHP officer thumbed through his dog-eared copy of the vehicle code, locking for something he could write me a ticket for. He even brought out a tape measure to check headlight and rocker panel heights. In the end, I got a ticket for not having "mud guards", even though the tires are fully under the body work. The officer defined them as mud flaps, that attach to the body, and come close to the ground, this is all while vehicle after vehicle without them passed right on by. All vehicles operated on California roads are required to have mud guards, but the law does not define what they are, in any way.

Bottom line is, if they what to stick to you, they will.

  3. Gimpy, that's sic, I'm no lawyer { thank GOD } but that could very well be your way out. If the statute reads must have a " mud guard " and he wrote you for a " mud flap ", plead not quilty. I bet you walk on that in court. Be sure to do a long smokey burnout as you leave. Tell em it was your mud guard rubbing on the tire.

He wrote "mud guard" just as the law specified it, and even wrote the statute number. He said "mud flap". The statute is deliberately vague, as are most. Interpretation is up to the officer. Challenging the ticket would require a judge to take my argument over that of an L.E.O., not too likely here.

It was a "fix-it" ticket, so no fine involved, just a $50 court "filing" fee. I just tossed on sum mud flaps, and the local PD, who were disgusted too, signed off on the ticket. They said that they would have signed off on the ticket even if I had done nothing to the truck. I did not want to risk that, as the CHP officer patrols my stretch of the freeway.

If they're DOT-approved, how could the cops mess with you for them? Cops can only enforce the law.
