I have an Offenhauser 4x2 intake that I would like to run on my 409 Engine. I am planning on using Rochester 2 barrel carbs on it. Has anyone ran one with Rochester carbs before? If so, how would they need to be jetted to run on the street? My 409 is a basic stock rebuild with a 224@50 hydraulic cam. Thanks
, I’ve found the best way to start with multi carbs is a meticulous bone stock rebuild and straight linkage. Don’t try to plug things or turn in idle screws etc. it will never run right for a street car. Run it and it will tell you what it wants, bigger jets smaller PV etc.
I have Offy four 2's with 4 bolt Rochester on a 327 in chevy with flat tops. & small thumper cam. It runs good on straight linkage (non-progressive ) It idles & makes 365 HP on the dino at about 5500 RPM. Like 51box said Run it to see what it wants before you start fiddling with it.. I have four 2's on my 32 coupe & I have never turned screws on it. Don't over think it!!!!
This is one of those situations were a competent dyno operator and a stellar carb tuner can make a huge difference in a matter of hours. Set it up, either engine or chassis dyne, run it and start making adjustments. Don't just focus on wide open pulls. Spend time at idle, cruising rpms, and part throttle operation.
A 'real sharp' tuning guy in San Jose helped a newby with a 4 jugger (Man-a-Fre) bought at a swap meet. Tuner rebuilt 4 carbs, but before installation changed main jets in Rochesters to some 8 sizes smaller, so they wouldn't be 'too rich'... 4 burned pistons and a couple of valves & seats proved 'Ratio of Proportion' to have been correct. Shouldn't have corrected the 'correct'...(at least not before a trial 'run-in'...)
Thanks for the replies everyone. I will start out with 4 Rochesters, make sure that they are all jetted the same, and just do a good stock rebuild on the carbs. Will have to figure out something on the linkage.
