Do a little searching.... Speedhut and Dakota Digital and others make a box that has a cable output for mechanical speedos ..... Looks like they all sell between $300-400.

If you change the speedo to a new manufacturer, say Autometer for example, they sell a GPS box that is the size of a deck of cards and uses a small puck antenna. Very accurate and doesn't care about gear ratios, tire sizes, etc. I had to use one in my Plymouth with an AX-15 transmission.

I have no experience with this particular product, but I have dealt with Speedhut and found them very accommodating and the product quality excellent.

i have installed the abbott and several speed hutts with great results , the speedhut will go gps but you have 2 options hot all the time (it keeps a eye on the satelite) or key on only ( then it takes a a few secs for it to find a satelite)(and speedo wont read for a few up to 15 secs when ya first fire up) , but no milliamp draw all the time ..if ya have a electronic trans you should have VSS sender on the trans that being said you skip the gps , the abbott is a lil less and not so fancy you set its speed with a row of pin switches and it comes with a chart ,, like a old electronic speedo did,, both have cable options , if you run out of cable options or dont like what they have call texas industrial electric they are the cable experts great service and know their stuff http://www.texasindustrialelectric.com/speedo.asp their site is impressive too

There are lots of threads on this topic, let search be your friend. My vote is cable x from abbot industries. Can’t be
faulted, though can be testing to set up.
Did try a sky drive gps unit briefly , it worked great but we needed ear muffs to kill the noise!!!

I came across this one after a quick search. It has a choice of GPS, OBDII, and VSS inputs: cool about that is that it calibrates to the VSS signal using the GPS —no fiddly calibration process— whereafter the GPS antenna can be disconnected. Like the others of this kind it is basically an electric motor driving a conventional speedometer cable, and some electronics controlling the motor speed.

Those parts will be needed to do the conversion but you will also have to weld a plate and reposition the hole for the speedo drive as it is in the wrong place for a manual setup. Kato kings can do that for you there is also a couple of guys on ebay who offer that service.

Have you actually run this transmission yet? A '98 should be electronically controlled, wondering what you're using for it?

    Thanks

I was a distributor for Classic Speed a GPS based unit to run your cable driven original speedometer from a GPS signal. The company stopped production during the Chinese tariff period because of the cost of the motors to drive the unit(Classic speed was made in the USA but using imported drive motors) I have one unit left If your interested.

I see, price has come down. Any reason you didn’t opt for the 700r4?
