I have a 1959 Ford F100 and I want to put a set of wide five rims on her. My only hesitation is will they hold up. Now my thinking is of course they will but I am differing to the braintrust on this board so that I can pull the trigger. They are 16x4. Thanks
I'm not sure if it is a good idea, but Speedway has these: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Wide-5-Wheel-Adapter-5-on-4-1-2-and-5-on-5-Inch,3444.html https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Wide-5-Wheel-Adapter-5-on-4-3-4-Inch,29179.html It looks like they only have these for 5X4.5, 5X4.75 and 5X5. I don't see anything for 5X5.5. I could see how the wide 5 wheels would look cool.
Because of the weight of the truck I don't think the early wide five wheels would work but later wheels and expense would get you there.
Genuine Ford wide fives might be a little weak (not to mention narrow) for your truck, but there are lots of aftermarket wheels made for racing that would work fine with the proper adapters. (In my opinion, running wheel adapters is the most questionable part of this.) I have a real nice set of aluminum wide fives (with matching tires) for my modified when I have to run it on asphalt. I think you can still get centers and shells from speedway and make yer own.
Well, here is how: https://highway101ind.com/products/wide-five-adapter-covers They have the adapters, as well as the covers to make it look like you have '39 Ford axles on your '59 Ford truck.
I just can't see that as viable on that truck using stock wide five style wheels. I've been thinking about putting wide 5 wheels on my Model A as I already have them on my tear drop trailer frame that will be towed behind it quite often.
They were a Ford thing, circa 1936-39. The appeared on cars and some trucks (Lincoln's too), in a couple of diameters and widths. A similar scenario was used on some Ford tractors, but a different pattern, and even VW and Porsche (same company) had a go with it, at 205mm, from '52-'70. There were likely others. The Ford Wide-5 bolt pattern was adopted and is still used today on some track cars:
