I know there are many ways of doing something like this... the options range from bondo over the holes to finding an NOS fender. I am not looking to half-*** this but by the same token, I am no pro. So, I'd like some opinions on what the best way to proceed is. There are several small rust holes, the surrounding metal is in pretty good shape. Under the fender, the lip has rotted off. (6 inches of it of so) The metal surrounding that is pretty good too. I have welded a little, done a little body work. (I have a small wire feed Lincoln - 110v) Your thoughts? (no smart ***es need post )
Get it down to bare steel, Sandblast, wirebrush, whatever, cut the lip off and make a new piece to replace it, drill the holes back to good steel, cut some plugs to fit and weld them in, use a good primer sealer then finish work it, DONT try to cover the rust, IT will come back!!!
That was a very good explanation, toymont. I agree. I basically did the same to my '64 Chrysler convertible I had at one time. Bought a cheapo hammer and dolly set and fabbed up some patch panels for the front fenders. I had about 8 hours into one patch panel the size of a deck of cards. I welded it in and put some filler on it and it turned out alright. I'm no body man, obviously. Give it a shot and see what you can do.
