Saw this Rustolieum Marine paint at Home Depot and wondered if it might be suitable for use. Chassis paint maybe? Anybody try it? Cheap enough. 20220601_131400.jpg t?

I don’t know about that but I have a buddy that has painted several cars with Canada’s version of rust-oleum. He does a coat and let’s it sit and then does a color sand. In the end you wouldn’t know it was rolled and brushed on.

Speaking from experience here. There was a product called "Topside Paint" specifically for marine use. Looks like Rustoleum bought them because the lettering on the can is the same as the "Topside" brand. It's an oil base with an alkyd resin and if they stayed true to the Topside formula, there's a lot of pigment in there. Since it's primary use is boats, it will be UV resistant and take a lot of abuse. You can spray it but the alkyd enamel I used rolled on with a foam roller and came out looking like glass. I'd say you would be pleased with the results, if you use this paint.

  4. I wonder what primer needs to be used under "Rustoleum Marine Coatings" paint. I'd be surprised if paint that is designed for fiberglass and wood has any rust protection in it (and I don't see "Rust Paint" on the can, so ... can it be used over regular Rustoleum Red Oxide primer for example?

    Hello,

We have used the Petit Brands of epoxy type of paints for all of our sailboats. We were told that the extra protection of the epoxy helps in the long exposure of salt water environment. Whether it is under the water constantly or up the sides above water. All paint corrodes in salt water or exposure to salt, over time. But the above water sides need washing after every sail and exposure to salt water. So, the long lasting Petit paint and the constant fresh water wash after sitting in the dock kept the longevity going.

The Rustoleum Topside, $15-$16 a quart, is a relatively new brand. It is an “oil-based modified alkyd with UV protection.” It is similar to household exterior paint is also has the same uv protection. The professional version of Dunn Edwards Acrylic Hues costs a little more, but does a better job of coverage.

We had our exterior surfaces of our house painted with the standard version the same color. It cost less and took two plus coats that did not last as long as it should have. But, when we last got the exterior painted, we used the Dunn Edwards Acrylic Hues Professional and it took one coat. So, you get what you pay for in quality.

Comparing Rustoleum topside to the Petit Brand of marine paint, I would definitely stick with the Petit Brand. But, you are using what is similar to household quality exterior paint and may not be satisfied with the results.

I would think twice for the Rustoleum Brand (for marine products) for your car. The Home Depot/Lowes Rustoleum Paints for metal and others do take two coats and always seem thinner than other brands. A lot of people think the Eastwood brand is better than most. But, it is your money and time… YRMV

I used that topside paint (oyster) on my firewall. Mixed it with majic hardener and some reducer.. it flowed super well and dried hard. The cars not on the road yet, so I can’t be certain if it’s durability.
But right now it looks killer.

Regarding exterior house paint in marine applications. My father-in-law had two boat yards on Long Island, NY back in the '60's and '70's. When he was re-finishing a wood hull for himself or some of his low-income friends, he used the best Sears exterior paint for primer and finish coats. He took the boat down to bare wood then mixed what he called primer 50/50 using the same finish paint and mineral spirits. When he applied the first four coats it didn't look like there was much paint on the hull at all. The next four coats were mixed 75/25 paint to thinner and when they went on, there was definitely color showing. The last two coats went on full strength and dried to a glass finish. I used his method on my 30 foot Chris Craft Sport Fisher and after four years exposed to the elements in Michigan, it looked just as good as when it was newly painted. I realize that this whole post describes my experience painting over wood but the paint survived harsh sun, lots of rain, snow and ice so I think the Rustoleum Top Side is going to work well.

Surprisingly Amazon will deliver it to CA. I would have bet the farm that they wouldn't ship it since its oil based.

You can buy that here in California. You can buy the topside paint here too.

    Lowes carries both.
