And I got started on "the point of no return" stage for the sedan :D If I had someone to help me today I would have cut the old roof off...I might try it tomorrow(its a long weekend here) but the wife has other plans for me so I am not sure if I will have the time but it will be off before next weekend !

Most of us car people have been called worse than crazy, I guess.
What brand of epoxy you use?
Congrats on the progress. I wish I had your energy!

All is well I hope...must be if your on here pissin away time eh :D Its just some elcheapo stuff from CarQuest it was on sale last fall for less than $70/gallon , alot of the exterior might get sanded off during the chop, I have some really high quality Dupont stuff here but you think I could find the bottle of activator for it ! Fred mentioned when your next trip will be up this way yet?

The reason asked is that I have used some of that el-cheapo stuff and found it not to be as water-resistant as the better stuff. I'd get that shell under cover after all that work.
I guess the cutting is underway, with those doors hanging. Progress. I'm green with envy.
Ya... I'm better now. BP went nuts for some reason.
No idea when the next trip will be. Haven't been over to Fred's for a bit. Between busy and then sick and now busy.. man.
I'm sure he'll be sendin' you a note or something.

  6. You are the man! I never seen anyone save something so bad. I can't wait to see the pics with the coupe body installed.

Just read this whole thread and to say I'm impressed with your determination would be a gross understatement. It's definitely a study in how bad you want something and in the process your going to prove the saying "you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear" dead wrong. Keep posting your progress as I imagine you've got a whole audience waiting for the next installment.

"Rusty Resurrection" indeed. Subscribed. I can't find words to express the awesomeness of what you've done/are doing with this car...uh...these pieces of cars. Just unbelievable. This is the absolutely most inspiring build I've ever seen. Shoot...you had to fix the pieces before you could even use 'em! LOL. I will always remember you and your project when I start frettin' about how much work I have to do on my projects, or my lack of $ or time or energy, or even that the weather or my work-space is not "ideal." You're amazing, and you deserve all the proper due respect. Maaaan...for all the work you're putting into this project, you're going to be just that much prouder when it's finished...and we'll be proud of you as well. People are gonna freak when they view the build pics when you show the car.

I know that a lot of guys don't like to name their cars, but traditional customs seem to get a name more often than not. If you do name it, may I suggest that it just has to be "Resurrection". I thought of "Rusty", "Patches", "Rolling Dead", etc., but "Resurrection" just fits this one. I thought your spelling...Res erection...was funny, intended or not. LOL.

One more thing...I read most of your thread, and the replies, and didn't notice anybody giving you a hard time for using the S10 chassis. Good. In this particular case, I say we all punch anyone that dares to. LOL.

Keep up the good work! Good luck with everything...and condolences for the loss of your loved-one. - Rick

Wow thanks for the kind words Rick ! Lol I never even noticed the misspelling on the thread title ...I always have some kind of name I refer to any of my cars by, mostly so the wife knows which one I am talking about, resurrection it is, I love it :D You are correct though nobody has ragged me over the S10 frame. Some nice builds by some respected people here on the HAMB have been based on a more modern frame . When this thing hits the road you will have to crawl under it to tell its not the orig frame, thanks again for the kind words from yourself and everybody else as well!

Well I got a bit done today...a friend had a rusty S10 he was junkin that had all new brake parts on it so I spent the morning stripping everything off that, good score there ! Its the same friend that gave me the 58 steering column, he doesnt know it yet but he will be gettin something in return that he doesnt know I have :D for his 58 2 door sedan. Anyways I got home did a few chores and decided to prep the roof for removal.

I pre-measured and marked the posts and made some templates yesterday ...

Same with the quarter panels made some rough templates from the coupe , I will over lap them till I am happy with the fit then I will cut through both panels at the same time and butt weld everything together.

Finally my stepfather dropped by so I pressed him into service and presto instant roadster :D sorry for the blurry pic though.

I might use the sedan back window area for the chop to help take out the hump, and I just might use some of the front of it to make some nice skirts for it, since I cant really afford the bucks for a set of steel originals.

And heres my ugly sunburned mug after a long weekend of fun ! hopefully at the end of next weekend I will be postin some pics of the two halves mated together.

    Cool.
They say the first cut is the deepest... but you have gone WAAAYYyyy past that.
What will you use to hold the roof section up until it's in place... the engine hoists?

Ya Joe thats what I am trying to figure out...it will prolly have to be on/off a bunch of time to fit it up, kinda hard to find someone willing to stand around and watch me trim metal scratch my head and curse and swear :p

Some sort of pulley system from the ceiling maybe? There should be room for that, as I recall your shop.
I guess you could jury-rig a bunch of different things for lifts.
How about suspending the top section and lifting the bottom to it... hmmm I guess leveling would be the concern.
    Fun stuff. :)
My next job on mine is to adjust/cut the front cross member to move the engine ahead a bit. Nowhere near what you are doing. I wish I had your energy!

Believe me Joe the energy can be pretty hard to come by sometimes!! I will be bagged for the next couple of days at work...but once I get out there and get started on something the fun factor overtakes the tiredness ! I dont get much time during the week but a couple of hours here and there starts to add up pretty quick !

Milestones help too. When I was gathering parts and just had the bare frame I built I wasn't as stoked as my first mock-up. Then to have the engine resting on the frame.. woohoo!
    Good luck at work.

    You are suchastud!!!! Canadian Stud??

Anyway, you can consider the '42 grille and related parts we discussed yours for the shipping as my contribution to your project. I am in Boston on vacation, but when I get back to Montana, I will start my chop, channel, section project that we discussed earlier. When the '42 grille comes off, it is yours.

And....at the risk of boring you or preaching to the choir......make sure you measure, measure, measure and then sneeeeek up to fitting the top sheet metal! Tack here, tack there and then measure. Tack some more, measure some more. Sneeeek up to the final fit. Take your time...you are young and have plenty of time to get it right.:D If you can stand to take the time to rig up a hoisting fixture, you will find that fitting and measuring will be a lot easier: almost like having 3 or 4 buddies standing around waiting to lift a bit here or lift a bit there.

Final preach: once you have the top tacked into place, roll the car out into the light of day and take a look from a distance far enough to give accurate perspective on what you have achieved.

Take a bow.....you are doing a great job.;)

I love this thread. I did a similar deal with an O/T GTO, making a hardtop into a convertible. I had that section in and out of the damn car so many times, it got a little frustrating at times, but totally paid off in the end. I think this will too, I love the direction this car is taking.

I plan a similar deal with my '55 Dodge sedan and convertible becoming one in an unholy union of welding.

Lol thanks Russ ! I think I am gonna rig up something from the rafters in the shop to lift the top up and down ,despite the fact I just wanna bomb into it :D Getting it to fit shouldnt be too bad...tying it all together will take a bit, since I gotta make the bottoms of the B pillars, de-skin the back doors to repair the quarters and make a new support framework for the trunk hinges etc etc before I can even cut the trunk lid loose so I can fix the rain channel and then the wasted trunk lid itself! Thanks again for the offer on the grille!! I have been trying to find one since I got the car, it will look great, tie in perfectly with the early 50,s exterior look I want ! Dont worry it will be rolled out of the shop often so I can make sure it looks right...and even just to sit there in a lawnchair and stare at it lol!
