I found this thread years ago and marveled at your ability to bring back the worse of the worse, and make it look perfect again. You need to find a Doctor with the same skills. Got to be one out there. Anyway, hope you will get back to feeling better, and you can get back to going though tons of mig wire!

  3. Glad to see you back Steve, even if it's just to "hang out" with us again. :) Keep swinging at the ball, you'll make some contact and see progress, even if it's slow. Shoot, even during times I don't get to work on cars for an extended period of time (like currently) I even like to just step a few minutes outside and pick up a few tools, straighten a shelf or sweep a bit of floor. Makes me feel like I'm making some kind of progress in a positive direction. ;)

  4. Well Steve, the guys here have summed up pretty well how we feel about your situation and the fact that you are back here (among friends I might add) and updating us on your build. I'm pleased you are on the cusp of dealing with your health issues - and wanted also to say "here, here" for a boss who takes care of his employees! Too many stories about being abandoned by an employer!

    Be well..

Thanks Sam , I appreciate that! It will be ( hopefully) easier for me to deal with after the dust settles. In a lot of ways I'm more stressed about money/ disability etc than the disease itself , if I didn't have to worry about that crap , everything else becomes manageable over time . I haven't resorted to television yet at least!

Steve, on July 15 of this year it will be my 20 anniversary of being told I have leukemia. It will also be the anniversary of being told I had about 3 years to live. Fooled them,,, not really, I got hooked up with a cancer drug study that saved my life. And I am still here but with everything there is a price. My body aches all day long like I have been beat with a stick. I get about 4 hours of sleep a night. From earlier drug treatments I have fibromyalgia in my legs (hard to stand and walk distances), and shot short term memory
The great new 30 X 40 shop? I know when 2 o clock rolls around cause I am done for the day. My new version of meds is now attacking my body, hair lose, cracking calluses on my hands, trouble breathing and from the doctors "Can you tolerate it?" yea I suppose I have no choice.
I am 62 and still working my day job, gotta pay for the race car and other toys. But like you I came to the realization it is time to thin the herd. But I did buy a running roadster for the wife to make up for her 30 Plymouth sedan project that will go on the block.
After a weekend of El Mirage it takes me two to three days to recover from the hours doing tech inspections, then running the roadster the next day. Speed Week? A couple of weeks.
Would I like to be 'normal'? Sure, but I play the cards I have been dealt, do more than I should, and have a great time!
Good Luck with your life, you are this side of dirt.

Yes please stop in Joe! I'd say let me know when your coming so I don't miss you but I don't go anywhere ! It would be great to catch up. Things could be a lot worse for me , that's important to remember but it's hard to think about sometimes... I'm finding that Frank Zappa had been of great assistance in coping this past week... I found a seat trim piece here for Rogers Chevy that the guy I sold it to never came back for, I bet it's still missing. Try and remind me to give it to you for him...maybe between the two of us we can remember !

Hi Andy! When I first heard about fibro I figured that's what might be my issue, but I never had it ALL the time ( like now) it would come and go, a joint or two might be sore for weeks months or years then you wake up one day and it doesn't hurt ...Dr laughed at me when I asked about it. That was a long time ago though. I wonder somedays wether I want the medical systems help, I've survived 25 years of it without any help from them , all they did was poison me with anti depressants and pain killers the bastards lol! I'm certain I can improve things, I just want to know everything so I can plan my attack. Don't suppose you ever found another T Bird seat for me [emoji3]

Thanks Jeff, it's funny I was thinking of that day a few weeks back! Seems like a million miles ago . I remember I was pretty pumped up because I had finally gotten my 55 Chevy painted, that was one of the first drives ! I'd love to have that old 4 door 150 again. Pretty sure I took some pics that day , I'll see if I can dig them up.

Ok Steve.... I'll TRY to remember the trim piece but, man... we should call it shot term memory instead of short term.
I think as we get older our hard drives get full and have no room for new data. If we could only find the delete button.

BTW... Roger loves the car. Raves about how much he and his wife have fun it driving around.

Believe it or not... the T is back in the garage again. I've been picking at it a bit. Rebuilding everything at least twice even though it's never been drive-able. Sigh.
I need to find a new main leaf for the front that is reversed. Mine is no good.
I'll bring pictures of the mess so far.

I'm drooling over that panel you have. I even photo-chopped it. I suck at it so I won't show it here. I'll let someone good at it do that.

I'll be sure to let you know in advance when I'm going through the area.
If you are up to it, I'll stay for a couple hours and give you a hand if you want. It would be fun.
Or we can just sit and stare at the cars. Always fun too.

Lol , I'm so old I don't have a hard drive , pure analog , which means no memory at all lol! Post the pic of the delivery . I'm gonna take some better pics for Eli to play around with, I have a few ideas for it, but really started feeling sick not long after I got it so I never got to get too excited about it . I loved that Chevy too, that car is a great cruiser and gets awesome fuel mileage too. Believe me I would have kept it if possible !

Enough medical crap talk , here's some pics of the Junkury project that I started in Oct '15 . Originally I was just gonna brace the body up and get it tacked onto the g-body chassis that needed to be lengthened 10" . I was hoping it would get me motivated to hit the 47, but I started having fun and decided to keep going because I have most of the junk here to get it running.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Oct 2015 I pulled the frame out from under the Malibu , cleaned it up with grinders wire wheels and phosphoric acid, then had to fix it, it was actually bent, I had to straighten it out, I had pieces of another frame to fill the holes, then I fishplated from behind before boxing the side rails. The way GM should have done it . I also rebuilt the lower rear control arm mounts , redid a lot of shitty factory welds and fixed some rust .[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    More chassis work..[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Since the car was in behind the shop I decided after a bunch of measuring to just build the subfloor framework without the body.

Analog man. I resemble that remark.
Check out Joe Walsh's Analog Man on you tube.

I'll gladly send you the edits I did instead of posting them here. I'll leave the proper work to Eli.
I have no proper drawing "pen", just my laptop touch pad.
I have no proper drawing program, just Paint.
    And.. I have no talent!

Dang it, man! How many cars do you on have on the go?
    I can't keep one going!

Cleaned surface rust, no expensive materials lol! Rattle can etch prime several coats of Tremclad red oxide, then grey tremclad , both brushed on! When it hardens you can block it like real filler prime. The goal is to repair , and stabilize the metal and protect it enough so at a later date a light blast and it could be properly body worked .[IMG]

This last pic shows the ONLY use for old bed frame rails building a car, to brace your floor less wonder so it doesn't move around[IMG]

'49 lower quarters , repair and make fit a '51 , very different besides the obvious length at the rear.

Some of you might recall the back roof of this car getting crushed by my airborne temp garage , I roughed it back into place and decided to used the rough old roof from the 49. It might be the only unchopped 51 with a 49 back light. I spent a few days cleaning it by hand and chemically, I was surprised by how clean I got it. I left as much of the 51 roof as possible and just set this on, the reason being I figured it would get chopped someday, and it would be nice to still have that metal there to work with after cutting this piece off, if that makes any sense ![IMG][IMG]

The main reason I wanted to use the 49 lowers was the half inch of tar that protected the back side, the 51 lowers are pretty thin.

    Some fitting required...

It took over 3 hours to get the dash out, all the screw heads were half rotted away...I should have just hung the dash on the wall and thrown away the rest of the car!

Man. You've done a lot to that old girl!
I think I spy Princess Auto trailer fenders for your tubs. They are a great deal when they come on sale, aren't they? Thick too.
I hope you feel better soon. I need you to teach me how to have that drive to do stuff again! Not sure I ever had as much drive to go from such rust-piles as you do though.
Care to tell me where you get all the square tubing you use or is it a secret stash?

They get the fenders from 2 different manufactures as I discovered when I went back for a 3rd one for filler pieces lol! I would have kept the originals but they were too thin. I can get the 1x1 here in Windsor but he charges 2/ft , in Dartmouth at Metals R Us it about $1/ foot. If I ever get this Merc done it will be a nice highway car. Perfect candidate for a 455 Buick or 501 Caddy lol. My drive that last day or so consisted of trying to find the speedo cluster for the 49 Merc dash in the coupe, shuffling around but I just found it! Figured I'd be a few more days looking for it!
