Ya, I did see different types of fenders at P A before. I had bought a few of them a years ago in hopes of using them someday.
They are heavy. I wanted to round them over more (side-to-side) to give them a crown. It took a lot of work to pound them around and then use my homemade e-wheel to smooth them.

I wish I was closer to Metals R Us. I went there once and was very impressed.

There is a place near Truro called the Subway Bottle Exchange and Recyclers.
They have a BIG yard where they actually organize (by size, shape, type..etc.) the recycled steel and general stuff they sell for really good prices. I usually try to load up there when I'm in that area. If you ever get near Truro you really have to go.

Amazing thread, and an amazing guy with amazing gumption.

I've had similar symptoms since around '92, the 'experts' say I'm 'depressed'.
It seems to be in my lungs, too...oxygen shortage?
I keep at it anyway, nice projects, younger wife, grandkids are all excited.
I do have some damned thing that's 'going around', did the antibiotic thing, rested, body hurts like muscle is being removed from bone... "Oh, you're depressed."
How can I be depressed? New admin, no more well, you've probably read up there above the 'divide'. LOL
Carry on, Steve. You're pulling me out of this faster than pills! Go, man...

I'm generally not big on frame swaps for Mercs but considering what you were starting with I think this was a great save.
The rockers turned out really nice, did you make them? I'm working on a 51 and I bought the only replacement rockers I could find, and they're a joke. Plus the rockers and floors in these Mercs were practically designed to trap dirt and rot out. So pretty on the outside but such a pain to deal with, these cars are like what I'd imagine dating a stripper would be like.

I also have a 49 rear window that I plan to put in my 51, whether or not I chop it. I just like the design better. I like where this build is going.

Joe if you ever want stuff from metals r us , I could get my step father to help me pick it up for and keep it here for you to p/u. He has little utility trailer I built for him a few years ago, he will take any excuse to use it lol! Keep it in mind if you need anything!

Thanks for the kind words! It's easy to get depressed when you never feel quite right, Dr's don't seem to know this!Have you had a proper chest CT scan?? On my chest X-ray they could only see something in the left lung, it was the scan that told them what was going on, it's possible to have it in other areas but not the lungs , I bet your Dr knows almost nothing about it either.

I looked for a Merc chassis for years around here, I've only ever found the one parts car ( the 49 I bought) . Not a lot of population here and the always damp ocean air just eats tin. The leaf springs had even rotted away frame was paper thin with large pieces missing, in fact when my neighbor picked it up out of the woods I figured it would show up here in at least 2 pieces but he got it here. Besides it would have been a waste of a nice Merc frame on this car [emoji23]. I agree about the rockers on these cars, not the best design . I heard all the stories about how bad the aftermarket rockers were so I figured I couldn't do any worse. What I did was kinda unorthodox but I'm happy how it turned out. I basically built a frame from conduit and 1/4 rod then wrapped the skin around it. All I have for a brake is a 30" little bench thing , I used a piece of 1x1 to tie the a, b & c pillars together and support the sill . It took 3 pieces to skin in , tacked at the top then I used a little floor Jack to push it into place...sounds confusing but here's a few pics.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Smart move making an armature for the rocker and skinning it with sheet metal!

It worked out pretty good in my mind first, but you never know sometimes . I've got some primer on most of that side now. When I can get it outside I will get some decent pics.

A bit of progress on the 47... I figured finding the 49 Merc dash bits and assembling it might take me a full day of puttering , well 3 days later it's presentable enough to put in . [IMG]

It two days to find the speedo that had somehow migrated to the basement in a box of unrelated parts.

It was pretty scabby so I cleaned it up and actually got it un seized . Anyone know if a GM cable might screw into it?

This is the first time seeing it in one piece ( more or less) since I took it apart to cut the rotten piece of junk in half years ago. This is one of my favorite mods on the car, worth all the work to save a dash that was more suited for wall art lol! Well it's 2am here I'm exhausted and have felt extra gross the last week ( I was hoping it was the flu but it's not going away) so I'm not putting it in now , I'm afraid of damaging the damn thing so you guys will have to wait for that pic . I also painted the 59 impala wheel .

Also I got some good news from my brother, he's coming for a visit over March break with my nephew , and has offered to help me on the car for the week ! My goal is to get as much done , from the cowl forward, so he can help me get the front clip and doors back on the body shell . I think it's an attainable goal as long as the biopsy doesn't take me out lol! It will be a massive positive thing for me to see this car looking like a car again, and I'm sick of looking at the S10 parts!

The stainless for the glovebox door is long gone, if I ever come across one I will narrow and weld the center pieces . For now I am hoping a piece of chrome body side molding , or if I can find some stainless trim here to experiment on.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

Steve... I'm feeling a little better today, (hope you are too) when I read the text and saw the pics of your rocker panels, especially the tube-and-rod 'ladder' frame, I said 'Here's an idea that a few may have had, but dismissed...like it would be too labor and time intensive...'
This is the best idea I've seen (especially for a builder with limited brake length)
Standoffs are sturdy, provide excellent support and framing for the sheet metal skins.
Thinking 'body foundation, outside the floors'.

Hi Mike, feeling a little better today , glad you are too, it took me quite awhile longer than it should have but I got the Merc evicted from the shop so I can spread the 47 over the whole shop now , which will make it easier for me to pick away at the doors and front clip , still looking through boxes for parts as well.

    Hey Steve...
The "Juncury" as you call it is looking really good!
Imagine once you chop it! ;) Did I type that?

What are you using now for rust removal? I know you had some phosphoric acid that you had got a long time ago.
I had never found a good source for that around here but I happened to find something at Can. Tire that is mainly phosphoric acid. I read that Home Depot has it too.
It's KRUD KUTTER "The Must For Rust Remover Gel".
I've read people mentioning The Must for Rust before but I lucked into seeing this stuff while hunting for something else.
It's like the old Naval Jelly that we could get around here as kids, before the tree-huggers took away all our nasty chemicals. Ok.. I am older than you so... hush if you can't remember that Naval Jelly. ;)
It's a spray gel which great for not running off so easy as a regular liquid. They do also sell it as a liquid, I believe.
I still like the black 3M woven fibre wheel to clean off paint and rust too.

Too young to know about it lol! It's funny you ask , the phosphoric acid I've been using was from Walmart , l guess they were clearing it out when it was banned? I got one and a half jugs left dammit ! I used too much on the frame for the Merc, started with dollar store oven cleaner lol.
