I remember your story about the acquisition at wally-world.
I'll checkout the Permatex stuff and compare the price. Thanks.
I'll stay away from the oven cleaner. ;)

It's great for degreasing ! Fitzee sent me to the dollar store to try it on the frame . Crappy Tirr had a few new products, I didn't recognize the brand names , probably rebadged for Canada for rust removal and a picklex type protector for raw metal.

Now that you mentioned it I did use it years ago for degreasing.
I guess we will try just about anything to make the job easier...
By the way... your "supervisor" (cat) isn't getting any smaller. ;)

If only these would just bolt on...like a lot of things , to get this car on the road I'm going to cut some corners in the name of time on mostly cosmetic things. Stuff I can address later once its on the road. It will definitely get these lights, just not now. I have some motorcycle lights that can be installed by drilling a hole.[IMG]

I meant the Juncury as you called it wasn't chopped. There is no question that Rusty is chopped. ;)

BTW.. I was hunting online for who-knows-what now and found some interesting plastic stuff.
It's beads of plastic that you melt in hot water. Once soft you can form it like putty.
After it hardens it is hard enough to put in a lathe... like nylon.
If you want/need you can remelt it to do something else with it so it wouldn't do for a hot application.
I was thinking about dash knobs or anything you want to prototype or make a mold for.
Maybe everyone knows about it but I didn't.
It's called many things but look up Polymorph Mouldable Plastic Pellets, DIY Plastimake Friendly Thermoplastic. Any of those terms or copy that whole list into EEEEbay dot ca.
I'd be curious what ideas folks have for it that are car-related.

    More snow coming Steve. :(

Contour of the body is way off, I planned to French them in , just a bit though , and a bit of lip molded to the body, hard to explain but I can see it in my head ! I want the chrome housings most guys just French in a custom aftermarket lens , but I like re using meet factory stuff if I can . I gotta make up for the sin of the chassis! Damn cold here too , not getting a lot done , finally feeling a bit better today so I'm out here puttering , and I guess I better fix the snowblower ...

Sounds interesting to play with. I've been meaning to ask you if you ever got to experiment with the molasses ? I fantasize about soaking every panel I can unbolt from the Merc lol!

Oh man... I've used the molasses a bunch of times to get rid of rust.
    It works. Period.
    Stinks too. Period.
9 parts water. 1 part molasses (if you have liquid). No idea if you have powder. No point in changing the mix. More molasses doesn't make it work faster.
Some people say you need a certain type of molasses. I didn't know there were so many!
I've tried feed grade, food grade and even Crosby's Lite... all work.
    Important:
    1. Degrease parts first.
    2. Do NOT put Aluminum or Magnesium parts in !!!!!!!!!!! Aluminum melts away to a sludge and mag looks like wormwood. Bad bad bad.
    3. It will freeze so watch the temp!
    4. Cover it. Once it starts doing it's thing it smells like fermenting molasses and rusty steel grinding dust. Not pleasant.

It seems to take 1 - 2 weeks to work depending on temperature
I've left parts in for months with no issues. It only attacks rust, unlike vinegar and other acid.

I was thinking of a vat big enough to soak a large panel...I could do that for the next few years with all the junk here! I've never bought any , where do you suggest? I definitely want to experiment with it , I have to , my days of sandblasting are obviously done!

Glad you are feeling a little better for now.
Cold? Yup. My brother and I insulated his garage, where I have the T. It makes life easier.

Blasting is just so much hassle and not a good thing for your health, unless you have good breathing gear or are a tough guy who doesn't care about your health.

I went to Scotian Gold in Coldbrook. Their address and phone number are on their site: scotiangold.com/contact/
I paid around 30 bucks for a 5 gallon/20 litre pail (as I recall) for the feed grade a couple of years ago. Make sure you tell them you want the liquid, not the powder, unless you get the mixture amounts from someone (let me know if you do get those mix amounts)
So that means (9) 5 gallon pails of water. That's a lot of liquid.

Let me know if you find a reasonable source for large containers.
I have made containers (sort of) out of cement blocks lined with heavy plastic but I have to worry about leaks if I pick the plastic.

Have a look on the you tube and you will see many folks dipping a whole car panel by panel or a bunch of panels at a time.
I've heard of people filling a small pool and dipping a whole Model A!

It's my kind of de-rusting. I dump the parts in and walk away. No constant grinding or harsh chemicals. No real "work". I'm told that I'm lazy. One of my sayings: "There is a fine line between being lazy and efficient." ;)
I would suggest taking the parts out once or twice to pressure wash them off. I find it helps speed things up and you get to see the progress/status.

Maybe a water heater that farmers use for drinking water for cattle would help for winter usage.

Another thing that will get replaced someday , the hood, decided it didn't really suit the car so it will get replaced someday. I have several to choose from and would like to smooth it out like a '42 .[IMG]

  17. Man, I stay away a couple of days.. Anyway, you asked a bit ago about the speedo cable (dash looks excellent by-the-way) and I found the stock Ford cable fits a Chevy trans.. Thank goodness as I didn't want to mess with making custom couplings! Check it out and let me know if I'm right, or if I got some mutant combo.. (I couldn't be just lucky!).

I somehow missed your reply Joe! You must have replied while I was too, sorry I never noticed it. Still not use to the app , it's kinda flakey at times! I have a bunch of metal pallets here that we used to get photocopiers on at work, I was thinking of building a tank frame of some type, line it with plywood etc , then a tarp for the liner. I could weld the pallets and use some 1x1 as well...that's what I've been thinking of ? The heater is a good idea...I wonder if that would speed it up in warm weather? I will definitely try and experiment with it. I think I can find something rusty ! Have you seen guys put chrome bumpers in? I wonder if it's ok for the chrome...

    No problem Steve...
    Flakey? So R I.

That sounds like a nice container except the tarp... unless you can get a really thick and good quality tarp I would suggest either pool liner or the thickest plastic sheeting that a hardware store has. I've tried tarps. Cheaper one leak too easily. I've had good luck with thick plastic from crappy tire.
I would expect that a strong epoxy paint on the plywood would do a decent job if you could get the corners sealed well first.
Hopefully others would chime in with cheap-ish suggestions.

I personally haven't tried a chrome part but have read that others have. As long as the chrome isn't lifting they say it's ok to dip.

You have a warmer climate than I do in summer but I've read about guys in Australia dipping for less time than we have to I'd sure try the heater any time.

  21. For your liner look at EPDM. It is a roofing membrane. Comes in 25 foot widths, I don't know what the shortest roll you can get it, but I would imagine roofing contractors have "shorts" left over after a job that you could get cheap.

I think it also is used for outdoor water features. You may could get it at Home Depot.

If you fit plywood together well, some glass cloth for the corners, a couple of coats of resin on the wood? I wonder if that would seal the wood... Or it just might delaminate after a week or two lol!

That should work well and last a long time. Even if it de-laminates (which I doubt) the glass liner should float around in the tank a a whole unit. It wouldn't be the cheapest way but it should work well.

Hey Steve, I'm glad to see you feeling better. Just catching up on your thread, I see you're working your metal magic on this Merc. Those photos are good material for any photoshop ideas you might like to see. Same goes for that Chevy sedan delivery. Lets see what we can come up with!

How about a refresher of the original car? Changed her shoes and touched up a bit. Might get your creative juices flowing again Steve. 31. Koolkemps \'47 Ford updated 2017.jpg

I've been trying to update here for a couple of weeks...I keep getting side tracked reading other people's builds though. Cool to see some long term builds still going and lots of interesting new ones too.

Thanks Eli that looks great...hmmm gold suede ??? I haven't updated in awhile about the car or me, so I'll do both ... for about 2weeks or so in Feb I had a dose of vertigo that made it difficult to do anything, so I picked through just about every box of junk to find anything for this car while trying not to barf , ugh that was fun ..that crap started to subside about a week before the biopsy...ahh the biopsy, where they managed to poke a hole in the lung , causing air to be trapped under the rib cage .. typical shit for me lol! It didn't collapse but I had 12 chest X-rays in 5 days while they watched it...hospital almost an hour away too! The results confirmed the pulmonary sarcoidosis, now the bullshit with insurance/disability ,Dr after Dr starts..more stressed about that than being sick. Family Dr said I can't fix copiers anymore...need to do something else...never talked to me about it though, the only Dr that cared or asked what the symptoms were was my eye Dr! Have I ever mentioned how I despise Dr's lol? Still waiting for the insurance company to "approve" me , even though they had no problem taking my premiums for 7 years...anyways enough of that shit , my brother was here for a visit and installed my Woodstove in the shop and helped get the 47 to the point where it's mostly light assy work I can slowly pick away at by myself.
I forget everything that's been accomplished but here's a few I can think of...some smaller parts cleaned and painted, front clip " painted " and assembled, grille polished , cowl and window openings painted ..I never got to the finish bodywork stage and can't afford expensive fill prime right now even if I could spray it, so what I'm doing is using a paint brush and some acrylic laquer primer, then block by hand, then it's getting some duplicolor blue laquer that looks good without clear. When I eventually get it assembled my neighbor will spray it in one piece for me ..hopefully it will look presentable. We got the manual steering box installed , I can always convert to ps later, but I don't have to spend $200 on custom hoses right now. Prepped and painted the door frames...i measured the driveshaft I got for the Merc and it's now getting used on this, the g body was too short now I can reposition the rear end where it should be... cleaned up a rear window gasket that will do for now... I have a front windshield one I'm trying to revive to make templates with if it holds together it might get pressed into service too...time for some out of order pics .
