People just get too hung up on labels. I really don't care what anyone calls my car. I call it a hot rod, but I could care less what anyone else calls it. I've probably called it far worse things when I'm mad at it working on it.

I wasnt impressed and im sure your really helping us rodders look good in the public eye with shit like that. Oh ya your stripers an asswipe for even doing it for you. Ok 2nd? or last? Someone close this stupid thread..

  6. Each to his own, but if your desire is to have a car like they had in the 50s, then rust does'nt cut it. I dont care what you paint on your car, but you specifically are trying to recreate the feel of the 40s and 50s, well I was there in the 50s, and guess what? I never once saw a rusty rod. I saw rods that had primer spots, and rods that were brush painted (one of mine included), but never rusty panels or whole cars in primer. Matte finish, satin or suede finish, bare metal, patina, these are all contemporary finishes, NOT "back in the day"!

what is your definition of traditional since you are the know all. there is a difference between building and assembling cars.

why do you guys care some much about what he paid someone to paint on HIS decklid. if you are offended by it then dont look at it. its simple.

  9. Well, I wouldn't feel right having a car with no rust.

That said, even the beat shit suburban I drive most the time, I try and keep some paint on most of the rust - it's not easy because there's a lot of rust spots, and it doesn't look any better really with the paint - but it has paint on it.

As for the back, I just have one of those 'support our troops" magnets. If I need to tell someone to fuck off, I have a middle finger to use -

  10. How could someone post something as offensive as that special olympic poster? That is beyond low.

  11. [quote I saw at our local hot rod friday night gathering a couple weeks ago, an absolutly beautiful car. I didnt know it at the time, but it was a fiberglass body with holes drilled and rust painted on. Fooled me. the car had to cost $60,000. Thats not cool to me, again, just my opinion.[/quote]

If it fooled you, as it did most people, it served it's purpose. The car is kinda a lampoon on the ratrod craze, while the ratrod craze is a lampoon of tradional rodding. Either kind makes me laugh out loud.

Especially like they are driven nowadays, usually when the weathers nice and not usually in northeastern winters...

My car is rusty....That's what made me buy it. I liked the fact that it was a roadster and that it looked like it was just pulled out of a barn after 50 years. So sue me if that's what i like.....I like that fact that it took many moons to get like that and in my eyes, why ruin it with paint...May not be the majorities idea but it's mine.....I had sold the Shoebox i had put together and was looking for something else since at that time i didn't have the time to put something together...Since aquiring this, i have built a '29 roadster from scratch and am currently building a '37 pickup and both will have some semblance of paint

  13. Back in the "Old Days™" some of you folks like to talk about so much, you wouldn't get 2 miles in these rusty, straight piped, floorless rattle traps. The cops in the "Old Days™" would call all the other cops to look and laugh at these things and then write you a ticket that might take up 4 pages.

Why would I care? Because I've been driving cars that are pretty low and getting away with it. Your junkers with rude sayings and purposely crude and anti social style WILL make driving a modified car (rod OR custom) a hassle. The cops are all over that mini truckers, rice burner guys and hot VW folks already. When they begin to see all hot rodders as prey, it'll be, in large part, because of people who stand up for their right to run stuff that looks like props from the Road Warrior movies.

Personally, I think that "Fuck Off" style belongs on skateboards and BMX bikes. What is the point in bringing that crap to the Rod & Custom deal?

    My 2¢ worth…

  14. I don't claim to be a know it all, maybe you missed the question marks. They were not statements, I was asking a question.
And yes I agree there is a diff. between building and assembling a car. I was refering to friends that start with clapped out steel cars and resurect them from the ground up. These are not 1-800 cars I am refering to, but rather hand built all steel cars. yet they have a lot of hand made CNC wittled parts. Does that make them traditional or hi-tech? I would say they are hi-tech cars, but based on your earlier post you made it sound as though it would be traditional because it was home built.
I am not trying to start an argument over this topic. I simply questioned you remark.

I remember the '55 Chevy wagon my dad traded for a new Impala in 1959. Those two cars and the birth of my sister are about the limit of my memory of the 50's. I do actually remember the 60's.

I'm pretty sure "Fuck Off" was not on any of the cars I remember from back then and I know it's not in any of the photos of cars my dad took in the 40's and 50's. So I can't believe it belongs on a "traditional car".

But back to the original subject of the thread, if a car isn't rusty today I probably can't afford it!

Great Point......I drove my roadster for the last eight years without ever being stopped....and I sure as hell want the same thing with my next ride. Dickheads have always made life miserable for the rest of us. And we all know who the dickheads are.

Naaaahhhh....Back in the day they'd paint swastikas on their cars.

    I've seen pics of that.

    Chili Phil,
You are correct.....except for one small oversight. There simply aren't enough "Rat Rods" on the road to get the cops on us. It seems like a lot of them are being built....but that number HAS to be far far below the number of mini trucks and "ricers".

The ricers get the run around because they are simply out there zooming around on the street.

.......its hard for the cops to pull over a "Rat Rod" thats being trailered to a show because its too damn uncomfortable and too damn unpredictable to be able to drive more than 5 miles.

Rat Rods are not going to "ruin hot rodding". I don't think the rat rod legions can put enough of them on the road to make a difference.

For example, I go to the nearest town on Friday night....I may see 15 or more "ricers" with the fart can muffler zooming around. I will normally see 0 "rat rods".....and maybe 3 or 4 old cars (pre 65).

I don't usally post on topic's like this, but I want to put my 2 cents in this one. My Old '50 F1 ain't seen paint sense Henry shot it black in '49, and it's rusty but I drive it every day and love it, and sooner or later I plan on putting it in like new shape, but for now it'll do for sure.. It was bought new in my small home town (I'm the 3rd owner) from my great uncle's dealership so i feel lucky to wind up with it. My local hardware store is getting ready to use it in a photo shoot for their stores christmas cards, I doubt seriously if they'd want to do that with fuck off wrote on it somewhere. All that kinda stuff is gonna bring heat from the man on hot rods. They lump the good in with the bad, just like everything else in life, so think about stuff like that before lettering your car. I like what people think of me in my home-town, do you?

    Hello Road Rat Eddie,

The word "fuck"has a considerable history, naturally considered offensive for ages possibly as early as the 16th century. Although its true etymology is uncertain, it possibly may have been derived from Germanic word "frichen" which means to strike or penetrate. The word has many connotations, it is quite versatile as well.

Consider this Latin/English poem circa 1500.
"sunt in coeli, quia fvccant vvivys of heli" "meaning they are not in heaven because they fuck the wives of Ely"

I also recommend you watch Deadwood as well, the muleskinner dialougue would make a rapper wash his/her own mouth out with soap.

I don't think putting "Fuck Off" on the back of your ride proves anything at all. It only draws negative attention to yourself.

My truck is rusty, but I don't intend for it to stay that way by any means. I like the "bare metal, everything hand fabricated, damn near perfect look." To each his own.....I'll eventually paint it, but w/ a nice suede or some scallops or something.

THAT'S WHAT I LIKE!! I think everyone should build a car to their own likings. Not build to get accepted. If that's the way your doing it then you are missing the point. I've popped open magazines and looked at cars and thought, "what the fuck?? That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen." But then you step back and think, WOW, that took a lot of time. That's what that person likes and you can't knock them for that.....
