this one takes the cake..hopefully it's the framework for some kind of upholstery or sheetmetal to be attached at a later point and not the finished product

    Indeed.

I'm hoping you're right, and that the material he used was not that super thin (and structurally useless) galvanized conduit (EMT).

He's got a lot of work in that frame, I hope to hell that it's built from something he can leave in place for good.

Maybe I'm way off track though. Maybe it's a built-in-place buck for a top he's still forming? A removable hard top maybe? Or maybe it IS a solid rod or tube frame for a removable fabric covered (carson?) top?

The finished product (whether metal or fabric) is gonna look killer, whatever it ends up being, unless of course that actually is the finished product.

Does anyone know if this is the original car or a clone?

That is my buddy Tim's car. His Dad and uncle built it in the late 40's and it is the same since. Runs pretty strong, like high 16's in the quarter if my memory is right. It is a B engine.

I was there and looked this ride over. Very well done, The top is not made of electrical conduint but 3/4 DOM tig welded and a great job! And yes top stays as is for that sunny California weather.
