Seats temporarily mounted in place. Between swap meets, work, and odd jobs we finally got back on the car! Also got it stripped down for a trip to have the cage installed. Due to my A.S. I've decided to pay for the roll cage. 10yrs ago I would have put it in myself.
Seeing how the gasser is going to another shop for a while. I'll give you a pic of a small block Olds I've got sitting in the shop waiting on it's final home!
I started building that engine before I found out the 56 was in the shape it was. Once we started finding all the hidden rust, plans for the car changed
These blocks are getting hard to find. I will post pics of all the machine processes that take place to turn this old boat anchor diesel into a 700hp gas burner!!
Bored the block for 1 sleeve at work. Got it installed. Will be bringing back to my shop later this week. I have a few hrs. on my mill before I can take it back.
All we need is a set of splayed caps. These blocks are extremely strong. I know of one that is containing nearly 2000 HP. Twin turbo set up. I'll see if I can find a pic of it.
Those blocks, cranks and rods are very strong. They were designed by Detroit Diesel built by Oldsmobile. They had to withstand high compression and hard explosions. No they were not Oldsmobile’s pro stock block though.
I would love to have enough Olds DRCE stuff to do a complete engine. That stuff is easier to find than the Batten parts!!
Looking at the motor, I thought you were building a Gasser not a streetrod. Cant you lose all that billet, its so not in keeping with the rest of this build. Old Tunnel Ram and 2 x 4 carbs would look much better.
If you'll read a few of the posts after, I stated that is going in another project. Especially after we found the extensive rust in the car.
Just came across this thread and Holy Shit how cool it is! My first car was a '56 Olds 88 mordor with the same color and a Rocket 330, not sure of the engine year. Paid $5 for it in 1971. Its real cool you're using an Olds motor and those main webs look pretty beefy. Designed by Detroit Diesel engineers? You're golden. Not sure if you'll be needing it but if you have any ideas you'd like Photoshopped, let me know. Subscribed. Eli
Ballsy... I'd like a little more meat under the toe clamp. Is that a 90 degree attachment for a Bridgeport?
Yes, it is. I have 2 machined bolts in the mains that fit snug in the t-slot groove. Only needed a light clamping to hold it tight to the table
What I'm doing is machining the injector pump boss out. Having to make room for a good timing chain. It's a 78-85 5.7 GM diesel. If your going to make 650+ HP with a Olds. This is the block to use. The main webbing in the gas blocks are too weak to consistently contain those power levels.
